The Good Doctor (4×15) Waiting Review

Synopsis: After a political protest turns violent, the team races to save two young gunshot victims. (IMDb)

This was certainly a contentious episode of The Good Doctor. Trying to talk about issues and taking stands without really talking about issues or taking stands, this was a minor issue in what definitely was an emotional episode for parents and parents-to-be in Murphy and Lea.

Waiting started with a mother named Taryn (Italia Ricci) bringing her son to his first protest for which he did not understand. This was juxtaposed with a polar opposite mother named Carina (Elizabeth Rodriguez) and son relationship as they were heading to the same protest. Meanwhile, Murphy and Lea at the hospital who watched news of a shooting at the same protest prompting the former to work. That latter boy was a victim of the shooting and was in dire condition. This boy was followed by the other boy who was also a victim of the shooting and was even worse.

Lea consoled each mother and did her best to help to try and bring them together as they were on opposite sides of whatever issue was being protested but were more alike then they may have realized though that may be easier said than done as her relationship with Murphy made her a biased participant (the doctors found themselves on different sides of other big issues which was awkward overall to watch as it effected their relationships with each other and their actions as doctors). Carina’s son surgery got more complicated as it potentially put his life at risk considering the damaged state of his brain. Lea got Taryn a status update for her son. The doctors still needed to remove bullet fragments from his brain.

Carina’s son Mason was struggling with brain activity while Taryn’s son Ethan had a seemingly unreachable fragment deep in his brain which did not appear to pose any more risk to him and would be dangerous to try to remove. Parts of his skull had to remain removed until his brain’s swelling receded. The choice to leave the bullet proved to be a mistake as Ethan’s brain worsened. Murphy’s main worry was about being wrong and maybe missing something because there was another fragment too deep to remove.

Expecting a child, this hurt more and it also affected Park. Meanwhile, Mason experienced clotting which put his leg at risk, especially due to a lack of blood at the hospital. Thankfully Taryn was the same blood type. Park found a way to the unreachable bullet fragment in Ethan’s brain (Reznick talked him off the ledge so to speak but he wanted more out of their casual relationship).

In the end, both children made it through their respective surgeries as the episode ended with Lea having an issue as she and Murphy walked out of the hospital together. Is she about to give birth or is it something more dire?
