First Date is an entertaining dark comedy in spite of its ridiculous plot thanks to the charisma and energy of Tyson Brown.

Dates have played a part in or have been the focus of countless films and rightfully so. They are one of the most relatable events in any viewers’ lives as everyone has at least been on a date in their lives. They can be good just as often as they could be bad thus films have depicted both sides across many genres. First Date is a film that loves on the bad side of the spectrum though in the loosest way as it becomes something more than that. Although the film arguably loses itself in becoming something more than a mere date film with a ridiculous story that did admittedly have its entertaining moments but through the good times and the bad, the one constant and the one thing that helped ground all of the craziness was a stellar lead performance from Tyson Brown in his feature film debut.

First Date follows a young man named Mike (Brown) who found himself conned into buying a shady car in anticipation of his first date. This purchase, little did he know, put a target on his back from a revolving door of questionable characters and became a distraction from his first date. As the situation got increasingly ridiculous and dangerous, Mike was all of us as he could do not much but hold on. The circumstances behind the situation around him and its many twists and turns may have fallen off the rails. Nevertheless, this was only a minor gripe as Brown as Mike was so fun to watch, bringing a compelling energy as the nervous teen looking to survive and make his date.

In the end, First Date is a blast that won’t be for everyone but those looking for a mindless ride will not be disappointed.
