Synopsis: Grace wakes up with a case of amnesia and sees what has become of her friends after she has been gone for years, and she struggles to put the puzzle pieces together on what has transpired. (IMDb)

What could have easily been another throwaway standalone episode became a testament of what the series could be when it is firing on all cylinders which means it probably won’t happen again.

In Dreams began with Grace waking up in the forest with a walker suddenly on top of her. Thankfully, she is saved by a stranger who disposes of a few more walkers. Athena (Sahana Srinivasan) wasn’t supposed to be out. Grace appeared to be stricken with some sort of amnesia. Athena took Grace back to what looked to be Morgan’s compound thus implying that she was away for at least 16 years which was Athena’s aged which may or may not have implied that Athena was Grace and Morgan’s daughter (the color palette also implied all of it being some sort of a dream). The sight of an older Morgan confirmed it but he did not recognize her despite her recognizing him and the compound.

Morgan was older and his memory wasn’t what it used to be. Nevertheless, he eventually remembered her but she was presumed dead after childbirth. Morgan also confirmed Athena being their daughter (Grace was hesitant to tell her the truth). Everybody was living in the compound except for Alicia, Luciana, and Wes. The birth of Athena changed the landscape and the conflict with the other group. It seemed to be over but it appeared to no longer be the case. As Grace approached a car with one of their messages, it blew up and knocked Grace around while triggering some walkers in this dream land. Soon after, Grace heard Morgan’s voice as if he was calling her from the real world as the line between each got blurry. Grace caught onto what was happening and that she was unconscious (the car in the real world said “The Beginning” and an explosion there led to her predicament while on the way to see June as she was in labor).

From there, Grace tried to figure things out in her dream land while Morgan assessed the situation his end while trapped in a house swarmed by walkers and eventually Riley and his people. As Riley showed up in the dream land, Grace and Athena became connected which meant that Athena was real (Grace was using her tape recorder to communicate with Morgan). Grace would have to wake up so that Athena could be born.

The two bonded as they caught up to the equivalent of Morgan’s location the dream world. Grace believed that her prior radiation exposure meant that she couldn’t spend much time with Athena in the real world once she is born. This dream land was made so she could get to spend time with her daughter. Therefore they made the best of it. Meanwhile, Riley just wanted Morgan’s key but he and his people didn’t seem to stand much of a chance. After dream Grace passed out, dream Morgan saved her and Athena. Grace and Athena’s goodbye was an emotional one as she walked into the light.

From there, Grace woke up though she desperately wanted to go back to Athena and their future. She believed that she wouldn’t make it but everything was going to be okay because of Athena (she recorded messages on the tape recorder for her). Coming back for the key, Grace told Morgan to give it to Riley because it didn’t matter as Athena was the future.

That future then began as Grace officially gave birth to Athena in a barn but as the baby didn’t survive, Grace realized that the dream wasn’t her last moments but rather Athena’s.

A more hopeful ending would have been nice and the Riley stuff could have been toned down but this is easily the best episode of Fear The Walking Dead so far.
