An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger, and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.
In all honesty, could this be the movie of the year? It feels epic, looks beautiful, and seems to have all sorts of fantastic performances. Now if that isn’t a recipe for success, then I don’t know what is. Gawain is going on quite the adventure. We got headless monsters, talking animals and giants, oh my!
One of the more beautiful trailers we have received this year, The Green Knight is shaping up to be a serious awards contender, or at least in my books. We have some just breath-taking cinematography happening here, real wide landscapes and all sorts of different settings. This feels like a massive scale movie with giant set pieces across the board.
Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Barry Keoghan, and Alicia Vikander round out the rest of this impressive cast, all really diving deep for this. It seems like a mash-up of King Arthur and Pan’s Labyrinth, which is just the highest of compliments. Even with two trailers, the movie is still shrouded in mystery, which is always a pleasant surprise. Not much has been given away, and that’s exactly what you want when watching a movie.
Hitting theatres this summer, it will be shocking if The Green Knight isn’t some sort of masterpiece.
