Over its first eight episodes, it’s amazing that The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers has avoided filler episodes though unfortunately that streak is over for the most part as this latest episode offers mostly filler as it positions the Don’t Bothers for the upcoming Minnesota State Hockey tournament while offering some awkward teen relationship drama. That being said, the series is skewed for younger audiences anyway so this shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise with adults writing dialog for teen characters. The episode did still have its moments and was certainly more interesting when it focused on the adult characters thanks to some great performances on their part. The episode title was pretty much a dead giveaway for what happens here as there were plenty of head games to be had but they weren’t all bad.
This episode didn’t waste any time, picking up with the drama between Alex and Evan with the latter forced to face his mother for her out of control behavior. That interaction was surprisingly an easy one as she was accepting of the situation, perhaps realizing that Evan had grown up thus deciding to take a step back and finally let him fly. She thought that maybe the independence would do him good and Alex could get caught up with her work while Bombay took care of coaching the team at the tournament.
On the bus ride to the tournament, the drama truly began as a divide was created between the boys and the girls. Each had different ideas for how their time would go until a party threatened that dynamic as Evan wanted to ask Sofi to the party while she was set to have a girls weekend with Maya and Lauren. Suffice it to say that things would not go how they imagined as a series of miscommunications and hurt feelings ensued when Evan and Sofi found themselves going to the party with their own dates as each competed to make the other jealous. All things considered, they all reconciled by the end but there wasn’t really much of a point to any of that,
The more interesting part of the episode, as mentioned, was the adult drama. With Alex staying behind, she found Christine at work distraught. Perhaps she wasn’t as perfect as she seemed to be as she was facing similar repercussions for her behavior. There was a synergy there as the two women, both staying behind instead of being at the tournament to support their respective teams, bonded in a way unlike they ever have and had some fun together. Meanwhile, Bombay and Coach T had a similar fun dynamic, going from playing mind games to sharing stories about coaching but that dynamic ended under much different circumstances once Bombay revealed a secret from his past that put his position as coach of the Don’t Bothers in jeopardy (of course Coach T turned him in). Bombay tried to speech his way out of it, however in order to save him, Evan would have to turn to to his mother and that she did.
Onwards to next week’s season finale and the Minnesota State Hockey tournament. I wonder how that’s going to go?
