So the whole season has been leading up to this, a collision course between the Don’t Bothers and the Mighty Ducks but this episode went beyond that and delivered some major feels. Although first, there was the formality of the Minnesota State Championships. Their appearance was certainly a testament of their fun first philosophy. Though it wasn’t always easy and they did have their ups and downs along the way, they had each other and that fact has been heartwarming to watch.
When it came to the championships. Alex, Bombay, and Coach T were ready as their teams took care of business on opposite sides of the bracket. Meanwhile, Alex and Bombay had a nice moment one evening in the middle of the tournament where they reflected on each of their journeys thus far, how they’ve changed each other, and where they saw themselves in the future. However, the Don’t Bothers still saw some adversity as Sofi, the team’s best player suffered an injury in the semi-finals. Suffice it to say that this put Sofi and the team at a crossroads come the finals. Sofi’s journey on the Don’t Bothers was a personal one for her so she took it hard as her condition put the team’s position in the final at risk seeing that team would be under the 10 player minimum needed to compete. The question then became that of priorities and what really mattered because at the end of the day, they were already winners and there was more to life than just hockey. Nobody expected them to get as far as they did as they became more than just a team, they became a family.
The championship may have been awarded but that wasn’t the end of the story as a wager between the Don’t Bothers and the Mighty Ducks made things interesting as they eventually got to compete in an unsanctioned final showdown, away from the fanfare for bragging rights and of course the Mighty Ducks name. The showdown definitely did not disappoint as it truly showed how far the Don’t Bothers have come. Nevertheless, it still wasn’t an easy game as the team would have to come together one more time and it was absolutely glorious as they had to dive deep to get there.
Now that the name has returned to more worthy owners, it will be interesting to see where the series goes from here. The “Game Changers” part of the show finally came into effect here and who knows what challenges will come their way come next season. Either way, we don’t appreciate Emilio Estevez enough and who knows what will happen with the Alex and Bombay dynamic as the series moves beyond that of the Don’t Bother underdog story into something different.
