Synopsis: During part one of the two-part season finale, the St. Bonaventure team travels to Guatemala on a surgical mission to help patients at a rural hospital. Once there, the team faces a small community that is in desperate need of their help but are assigned the daunting task of identifying who they can help most. And while Shaun seems to be thriving in Guatemala, Lea is still struggling with the loss of her baby. (IMDb)
Part one of the season finale time as the team does some humanitarian work and things get sad in English and in Spanish. I wish there were subtitles though.
Venga began with the team all heading to the airport for Guatemala for a surgical mission (you can tell a lot about the characters by their approaches). If anything, the trip would be a nice distraction from an otherwise tough year. Their mission did not get off on the right foot but Murphy and his Spanish saved the day by diagnosing a man holding up their bus (and it wasn’t just a throwaway case as he went back to check on him).
They weren’t going to save everybody so the matter was identifying where they can be of most help while others would simply be sent home which would be easier than done with tough calls having to be made as the doctors would need to set their emotions aside. It was all about gaining good will with the people but the situation was dire. The cases among the patient pool were immediately not promising as the gravity of their situation became apparent. That being said, there were still several that stood out, hitting the right buttons of all the doctors, moving cases back and forth between the yes, no, and maybe piles. Whether or not these patients could be saved did not matter as much as the fact that they were willing to try.
The debates about which cases to tackle got emotional as Browne couldn’t look past them on a purely medical basis. Meanwhile, Lea had an adventure of her own but the trip wasn’t quite a distraction from her still recent loss. She was dealing with her own issues that she kept from Murphy who just wouldn’t understand. The downtime also forced the other doctors to deal with their ongoing issues such as Park and Reznick while others got close to the local staff. Lim and Dr. Mateo Rendon Osma (Osvaldo Benavides) especially after the two were kidnapped by a taxi driver who needed them to look after a pregnant woman. They helped the woman deliver her baby successfully.
Finally opening up to Murphy about her issues, he was very receptive but according to her, there wasn’t much he can do. In fact, her parents suggested she should stay with them for a while which she was strongly considering and once again, Murphy was supportive of her. Meanwhile, the doctors determined the twelve cases they would be handling during their mission. However those go ultimately remain to be seen but there will surely be plenty of drama come part two of this season four finale.
