Synopsis: As Luke Fox’s life hangs in the balance, repercussions from the devastating event are the catalyst for some life-changing decisions for those around him. (TVGuide)
Batwoman doesn’t waste too much time telling us the fate of Luke Fox who was the victim of police brutality. While episodes are a hit or miss for this series, it is commendable for Batwoman to discuss topics other series shy away from.
Given this last year with the death of George Floyd, the incident with Luke was very timely and important to highlight. Sadly, Luke is in a coma for most of the episode, but he isn’t exactly absent the entire time. Instead, we see him travel through his subconscious where he talks to Bruce (Warren Christie) and pleads to talk to his father who he can see through a blur in the distance. While traveling through his subconscious, Luke must decide if he wants to live or accept his death. It’s very typical of scenes like this, and unfortunately for Luke, being able to talk to his father means accepting death.
Batwoman spends the episode trying to find the car thief that ultimately got Luke shot by the police while Mary obtains the Desert Rose that will bring Luke out of the coma. But that will take time to prepare so Batwoman heads off to confront Tavaroff (Jesse Hutch). He doesn’t think he did anything wrong with shooting Luke, and there is nothing Batwoman can say to get him to feel even remotely bad. Tavaroff ends up being worse than we imagined and gets the C.R.O.W.S to run Batwoman over with a car.
All the while Jacob seems to be absent from the madness descending in Gotham. Instead, there are two agents guarding Luke’s hospital door who refuse to let Mary in to help. Things get even worse when Tavaroff’s goons edit the bodycam footage of the night Luke got shot to make it look like he pulled out a gun. The only way to get their hands on the actual footage is to hack into the C.R.O.W.S. servers and steal it before the system erases it at 3 A.M.
Sophie isn’t working with the C.R.O.W.S anymore so she appeals to Jacob to help. They’ve had their own share of issues recently, but since Sophie is a part of the family, she’s hoping Jacob will listen to her. To get ahead of the game, Sophie plants a bug so Batwoman can hack into the servers with her help. Simultaneously, Sophie also gets Wolf Spider (Lincoln Clauss) to get into Luke’s hospital room and give him the Desert Rose.
Jacob eventually decides to help out and confronts Tavaroff but gets knocked out by him instead. Batwoman has to leave the servers to go save Jacob, which means they won’t be able to prove Luke’s innocence. She shows up in the nick of time and takes down Tavaroff and his goons. Later, Jacob announces he is disbanding the C.R.O.W.S while also declaring that Luke is indeed innocent. They don’t have the footage to prove it so they’ll have to take his word for it. In Luke’s subconscious, he chooses death and begins walking toward his father but is pulled out of it as the Desert Rose takes effect. He’s utterly heartbroken to wake up to a world he doesn’t want to be in.
In other parts of Batwoman, Alice tries to figure out whether or not Team Batwoman have met Circe Sionis. With everyone else out, Mary is the only one in the Batcave and tells Alice she has never met Circe. It leads to another dead end for Alice but she does tell Mary to be wary of Black Mask who is hell-bent on taking down the Kanes. It’s an interesting moment to see Alice show concern and for Mary to reciprocate it by saying everyone deserves love, even Alice.
With nowhere else to go, Alice looks to her father to get help with saving Kate. It’s going to be an interesting team-up, one that we didn’t really see coming. But when it comes to rescuing Kate, this family will do anything.
