Stanley Kubrick is undisputedly one of the greatest directors of all time but what were the methods to his madness? Offering an unprecedented level of insight into the life and his legendary filmography from the master himself, from his early days as a young photojournalist to an acclaimed film director, Kubrick by Kubrick is a documentary about the man told through a series of unearthed interview recordings with the man himself and other archival news footage and interviews with some of the stars and those working behind the scenes of some of his biggest films. The film is perhaps not the deepest exploration of the man and his life due to its narrow focus on his films and their impact. Nevertheless, simply hearing the man speak about his early life and its impact on his films and filmmaking as a whole and his thought process during the making of those films was both compelling to watch and invaluable to hear.
Running at a brisk 73 minutes, one can’t help but want more from Kubrick by Kubrick as the film does an excellent job at placing audiences in the moment, so much so that they won’t want to leave. His methods may not have followed the norm and may have rubbed some people the wrong way but it’s hard to argue with the results as they could see the genius of what he was doing even if some couldn’t understand it at the time.
In the end, anyone who is interested in film owes it to themselves to put Kubrick by Kubrick on their watchlist.
