Synopsis: Batwoman struggles as Black Mask continues to raise the stakes; Alice and Safiyah cross paths once again. (TVGuide)

Batwoman is one episode away from its season 2 finale, and it was a surprise. It doesn’t feel like long ago when we weren’t sure if television shows would be able to make a return at all due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But here we are, a year later approaching the end of yet another season. Admittedly, this season has been a huge struggle especially considering Ruby Rose’s exit made the whole story way more complicated. And there’s also the fact that the series can’t seem to let the story of Kate Kane go. Seriously, I am so over it.

In any case, this week kicks off with Batwoman trying to question one of Sionis’ henchmen about his whereabouts. The guard claims to know nothing but Luke and Mary aren’t so sure he’s telling the truth. Meanwhile, Kate or the new-faced Kate is struggling to regain her memories but finally recognizes Mary at some point. It’s hard not to feel bad for Mary, one would think that she’d be one of the first people but nope. With everything Kate has been through, the decision is made to let her recuperate and look to Alice for help. Sadly, Alice is too overcome with grief over losing Ocean. She’s not sure it was worth the sacrifice to save her sister, so instead of coming clean about Kate struggling, Mary opts not to bring anything up.

While everyone else is eager to get Kate back to her normal life, Ryan thinks that there is still some work to be done. No one else believes that Kate needs help, but as the episode goes on, they sure do regret not listening. Apparently, Kate is still her Circe Sionis persona and is just messing with the Bat-Team to get insider information. She reveals as much to Sionis and Safiyah. Meanwhile, Ryan decides to move out of the loft and realizes that with Kate back, she needs to give back all of the things she had taken of hers temporarily. Sophie doesn’t think it needs to be so drastic, but it’s not Ryan’s fault.

Tavaroff and the other corrupt C.R.O.W.S. wind up working alongside Sionis and False Face to get their hands on a collection of weapons. Given that Tavaroff was under the control of the C.R.O.W.S. system, he’s not sure he wants to get back into that but Sionis gives him many reassurances. Ryan goes back to living in her van and realizes it was the right thing to do when she sees how the Bat-Team is so happy to have Kate back. Whatever time Ryan has left of being Batwoman, she wants to take down Sionis with it so she puts her efforts into that. However, she is bombarded with the police and arrested for dealing with Snakebite, which she was obviously framed with. During a conversation with Sionis, Ryan tries to appeal to his emotional side but it doesn’t seem to work.

Luke and Mary learn of Ryan’s arrest and ask for Kate’s help, who is busy flirting it up with Sophie in an attempt to get back her memories. It’s not long before the rest of the team learns that Kate is still Circe and just trying to betray them. She shoots them all with tranquilizer darts and prances around the Batcave until she finds a secret room that Bruce once used. There is an entire collection of trophies Batman has collected from his enemies over the years including Joker’s buzzer, Bane’s venom, Penguin’s umbrella, Killer Croc’s tooth, Poison Ivy’s vine, Clayface’s mud, and the Mad Hatter’s hat. It’s actually a pretty fun scene!

Back at the station, Ryan tries to tell her parole officer that she is innocent and being set up. She even reveals that she is Batwoman, but it takes for the GCPD officers to attack Ryan and the officer for her to be taken seriously and given a chance to escape. Ryan heads back to the Batcave but finds that the team is captured and Kate is ready to take her down. Circe threatens to kill everyone but Ryan steps in to kick major butt and saves the team. Unfortunately, Circe gest away with the Batsuit and all of Batman’s villain trophies Circe takes these trophies to Sionis who hands Bane’s venom to Tavaroff. He’s going to succeed where all these villains failed, and I’d say he’s off to a good start. Later we see Circe scratching up the Batsuit with a crazed, deranged look on her face that might be mistaken for overacting.

Still dealing with Ocean’s loss, Alice goes to spread his ashes into the ocean and finds Safiyah there who says she will kill Alice if she doesn’t get over Ocean. She wants Alice to go to Coryana with her where they can use Poison Ivy’s vine to make Desert Rose again. Safiyah also reveals that she is working with Circe and that Kate is not doing okay. Alice doesn’t seem to care a whole lot about what Safiyah has to say and stabs her right in the gut with the Desert Rose dagger.

Alice is ready to get her family back, and so we’ll see if she really means it in next week’s finale!
