For anyone who hasn’t yet discovered the joyful and refreshingly entertaining Sex Education, they need to catch up right now!
The last season had viewers barely holding on to the edge of their seats, trying to figure out if Maeve and Otis would finally sort out their feelings and get together. But alas, it was not to be. It seems that powers beyond their control doesn’t see them as a match. It also left Eric and Adam in a bit of an interesting situation, with Adam confirming his feelings for Eric and Otis seemingly to be getting closer to Aimee. One of the strengths of the series is how its storyline and characters can be quite unpredictable, and their journey turns out to be something beautifully surprising for the audience.
This new season of Sex Education brought new and challenging situations to both the teens and adults as they navigated their way through their often intertwined and erratic lives while peeling back more layers to bring viewers even closer to them. While Otis and his budding relationship with Aimee grew, it became clear that she was so much more than she pretended to be. Maeve still saw struggles related to her relationship with her mother. Adam and Eric’s relationship saw some developments over the course of the season while his father and Moordale’s former headmaster saw an expanded role this season. His story arc took a heartbreaking turn that was also incredibly uplifting! Jackson befriends a new student from the United States. However, one of the biggest reveals for this season comes in the way of a new headmistress for Moordale in the form of Hope Haddon (Jemma Kirke). Will she be the catalyst that brings Moordale together and united, or will she be the last thing the students need in their already complicated lives?
Meanwhile, the caliber of the writing is nothing short of amazing. The characters are so well written and are so convincingly realistic that it is easy for viewers to see themselves connecting with some of these characters on a deeper level. And it’s not just the kids who are learning and growing as characters. Jean’s story arc this season also saw a boost as the now pregnant therapist went on a bit of a roller coaster ride of her own to say the least. Ultimately, one of the best aspects of Sex Education is how viewers are never left to feel like their favorite character is being pushed aside and forgotten at the expense of another. The plot almost always seems to for the most part find a way to involve the characters that it needs to in whatever moment they need them in just the right amounts, consistently delivering to audiences a cohesive and compelling narrative.
That being said, this latest season of Sex Education wasn’t without its issues with the biggest one revolving around the end of the season. For the most part, it all just felt rushed, seemingly like the characters were running for a door slowly closing on them. While its unclear, at the time of writing, whether the series will be renewed for a fourth season, it will certainly be hard not to given the cliffhanger at the end of the season that is sure to not sit well with some viewers.
In the end, there is so much more that needs to be said and done for our characters yet. So here’s to hoping that we will be back reviewing the fourth season for our readers come some time next year.
