Peacemaker (1×04) The Choad Less Travelled Review

After a wild premiere, picking up the pieces after the events of The Suicide Squad and establishing the dynamic of the series. While it may have been a little rough around the edges and the humour was more hit than miss, Peacemaker has still been an entertaining watch thus far thanks to the magnetic charisma of John Cena as the titular character and this latest episode was another step in the right direction.

Taking a step back from the the main story, this episode was a step in the right direction by taking more of a character-centric approach which worked beautifully thanks to the script and the chemistry of its cast, generating some hilarious and touching moments. That being said, it still found some time to touch the main story by the end with a not so shocking shocker that could possibly change the landscape of the rest of the season. I also want a Freddie Stroma led Vigilante/Adrian Chase spinoff series.

The Choad Less Travelled began with a task force debrief on the way back to their makeshift headquarters as everyone continued to not be on the same page. The team’s failed attempts to fix the situation did not please Murn whose questionable decisions have been raising some eyebrows.

Peacemaker and Vigilante tried to mend their differences as the latter took his partially-severed pinky toe the wrong way. Getting some supplies from Auggie’s house, they learned about his imprisonment which did not sit well with Peacemaker. Worried about what that would mean, Murn sent Adebayo to try and save things at the prison where he was being held.

Peacemaker and Vigilante (and John Cena and Freddie Stroma) make a great duo and Adebayo added to that dynamic nicely with Vigilante clearly failing at hiding his identity from her. Nevertheless, she more or less tried to manipulate him into killing Auggie for the good of his best friend which was a hilarious thing in and of itself as he got himself arrested and put in the same prison. At the end of the day, keeping Auggie in prison based on a lazy plot hole where the government couldn’t just rerun his fingerprints wasn’t the best but being a racist among other things, maybe he should be there and his latest interaction with his son proved it as it hit him hard. However, this did not mean that he wouldn’t spill that he was framed.

Trying to take Judo Master hostage was probably not going to end well and it was looking that way. He and Peacemaker would get a rematch with the latter seemingly having the upper hand until that battle was cut short by Adebayo who shot someone in Judo Master for the first time though just incapacitating him. Adebayo was in it and she was not ready with what that meant but she was getting there but her relationship with Harcourt who helped her along in her own way had been fun to watch.

A montage saw all the characters in their element as they dealt with their feelings in their own ways. This arguably meant the most to Peacemaker who was processing his daddy issues. A flashback showed how far back those issues started. The end of it saw Adebayo finding a connection between the main butterflies so far as the episode eventually revealed that Murn, the leader of the task force, was also a butterfly which alone raises a lot of questions to say the least.

Now how long that charade will last remains to be seen but the cracks are there within the group.
