The last episode saw Eve and Villanelle seemingly going their separate ways though if this season is of any indication, their stories are far from over, especially with the Twelve still out there. Putting an end to everything once and for all seems to be the goal but of course the two and Carolyn could not do it alone. These three and the performances from Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, and Fiona Shaw have been the guiding force behind the series thus far and that does not look to change come this fourth and final season. In the end, how they all go about it is going to be the fun part and one that may surprise some viewers along the way.

And that surprise began right away as Eve established that she was someone much different this time around by absolutely taking charge. She didn’t need Villanelle. No longer working for MI5 and now working for private security allowed her more freedom towards her crusade against the Twelve. Her next mission was to track down a lead from the Twelve, a woman named Helene (Camille Cottin). Meanwhile, demoted and now working out of the UK embassy in Spain, Carolyn was bored, using her time to continue working at her old job and trying to find who ordered the hit on Kenny. However, those attempts did not go unnoticed by her former superiors. Nevertheless, she turned to her former Russian contacts for help.

Villanelle, on the other hand, attempted to embrace religion as a means of continuing to reform herself and her murderous ways. Knowing what we know about her, it’s easy to be skeptical of her true intentions as she looked to be trying too hard for the people around her. Underneath that warped psyche of hers, all she wanted was to fit in despite maybe not always going about it the right way. In her mind, it was all about proving to herself, but mostly Eve, that she could change and be a different person. This was going to be something that will take some time. Whether or not she would be willing to make that effort remains to be seen. Again, knowing what we know about her, it seems unlikely, however, the writers appear to be setting her up for a redemption arc. That being said, Comer and her performance makes it easy to root for her in spite of her questionable ways.

While eventually tracking down Helene was one thing, tracking her down from her last recruit, getting closer to her proved to be a challenge. However, this was a different Eve. Her motivations were clear but little did she know, she may not have been alone in her mission though it wouldn’t be so simple. She would still have plenty of work left to do. Despite that, this new Eve and Oh’s performance have been a delight as the evolution of the character over the course of the series has been a highlight. It will definitely be interesting to see that trajectory over the remainder of the series. Helene is a fascinating character but it would be safe to say that Villanelle will somehow involved in the final outcome. Any excuse to put Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer together on screen is fine with me. Just don’t forget Fiona Shaw’s Carolyn who is still an absolute boss and deserves some closure too.
