Ethan Esther Chaim was a great penultimate episode and set the wheels in motion, highlighted by an unexpected turn from Rose Weisman.

Rose just needed to lighten up.

The episode began with what essentially amounted to a weak Milo Ventimiglia cameo as some nondescript good-looking man for whom Midge would have an off-screen fling with and setting up a pretense for her loss of her lucky dress. Meanwhile, she was brought into Joel’s issues besides having Archie lose his money, still being his ex-wife and the mother of his children of course. Not knowing much about Mei, Midge ran into Frank and Nicky and had them look into her but eventually got scared off.

Dinah’s issues were getting too much for Susie. That being said, she still found Midge a headline gig but being in Croatia among other things made it out of the question. However, she stumbled onto her own opportunity working at a party for John F. Kennedy’s election campaign. Midge had to be clean and it started off that way until it didn’t, pulling out the story from the beginning. That story hit close to home with who appeared to be Jackie Kennedy.

The matchmaker gang caught up to Abe who took their threats very seriously but his escape was a hilarious story in its own right that saw him sneaking into a church and accepting communion that he kept and was trying to dispose of in the least sacrilegious way. Rose and Midge were on similar journeys therefore the latter encouraged her mother to not give up.

Setting up to fire Dinah, Susie brought her to a club she suggested but things changed until she saw a funny African-American standup comic named James (Jay Will). Her interest shifted to acquiring him as a client for which he reluctantly accepted.

The best part of the episode was when the Weisman clan attended Alfie’s magic show where he hypnotized Rose into being a standup like her daughter. She got surprisingly dirty which made it even more hilarious while making the others uncomfortable but the material came from Midge’s act at the club which made her suspicious. However, Rose got it from the time she visited the club.

In the end, Moishe found himself in trouble, having a heart attack upon Joel supposedly telling him about him and Mei. Meanwhile, all signs point to Carnegie Hall for the finale with Lenny Bruce set to headline an upcoming show there.
