It’s about time that Oliver got a backstory and this episode’s cold open was devoted to him. He lived quite a life in the 1970s where he boasted his skill of deciphering secrets, especially at parties. He had an eye that could see everyone’s particular tell. This episode was just a perfect showcase of Oliver’s genius neuroticism thanks to another terrific Martin Short performance.
Charles’ meeting with Jan was to get insight on the case but it turned into something more as she was not quite over him and a little crazy. From that point on, the hold she had over him slowly started creeping back. Nevertheless, she told him that they should look for a storyteller or artist based on the killer’s organization of the crime scene. Their goal was to stay close so they can finish their unfinished so called masterpiece. This seemingly suggests Mabel’s new friend Alice (Cara Delevingne). Meanwhile, her discovery of a matchbook belonging to Bunny’s favorite restaurant with what appears to be a bloody fingerprint in the catacombs underneath a hole in her closet was a more pressing issue.
The next step was to cross-reference Jan’s lead with restaurant regulars. However, that issue took a backseat to Alice’s party which was unceremoniously moved to Mabel’s apartment. Charles and Oliver stuck out until Oliver hijacked the party by pulling out his 1970s party game with Mabel’s appartment going back to the 1970s which was a nice touch. In the end, it was just an elaborate way for Oliver to corner Alice who indeed was not who she claimed to be but her motivations were not so nefarious, lying in order to build a reputation for herself and her art. Causing some friction between she and Mabel, the two made up though maybe there was more there.
Another big discovery was Oliver connecting the matchbook to a grainy character who argued with Bunny at the restaurant. Ultimately, it was Teddy Dimas who had the last laugh as Oliver learned that Will may not be his son due to his 50% Greek DNA thus implying an affair back in the day.
There are now two suspects out there since Alice definitely has more secrets but she is probably not the one who argued with Bunny. The investigation is slowly moving towards a conclusion as the pieces are there without a way to fit them together just yet.
