Despite the episode title, there weren’t that many pieces being flipped in this latest episode of Only Murders in the Building. Besides setting the stage for what is to come, this episode gives viewers a much-needed backstory for Mabel, filling in some of the gaps that her trauma-plagued memory had pushed back as she tried to put all the pieces together. There were flashbacks of her relationship with her father (Mark Consuelos) for whom she was close with, completing countless puzzles together until his untimely death from stomach cancer. Meanwhile, there was a cliff-hanger to address as well.
That story began in Theo Dimas’ apartment following the subway incident. Riding on the same subway, he saw that Mabel was in shock and took her back with him. That being said, she was still reticent of his help considering their past history. Despite that, Teddy vowed that he was a different man. However, communicating would be a challenge. In the end, it was all about retracing her steps and finding her stolen bag. The bag might be gone but Theo still had a clue to glitter guy’s identity which took them to Coney Island. They had some fun together until Mabel had the biggest breakthrough in the episode which was finding the glitter guy in what was a very tense sequence though his identity remains unknown.
Worried about Mabel, Charles and Oliver had a returning Detective Williams to deal with. She had questions as she cut her maternity leave short to confront them. Williams knew there was more going on and the others weren’t doing that great of a job at hiding it. She wanted to help therefore Charles and Oliver eventually got her the murder weapon.
After an intense afternoon, the matchbook was gone but Mabel also found a picture of Charles and Lucy suggesting that they were being watched. Lucy found her way back to Charles’ apartment, however, a blackout across the city was going to make things more difficult for everyone, related or not. While Gomez was fine as Mabel, that backstory could have gone deeper though it still could. Though we might not be closer to a killer, the glitter guy seems to be key. Hopefully he won’t do something with the blackout.
