D23 Expo 2022 Recap Part 3: Marvel Studios

Finally, the showcase most have been waiting for, its time for Marvel Studios to take the stage. Kevin Feige came onto the stage to kick off the show with a live performance of “I Could Do This All Day” from “Rogers: The Musical” which first appeared in the series premiere of Hawkeye. This performance was a definitely a surprise and helped set the tone for what was to come. With that, let’s take a look at everything that was announced by Marvel Studios.

Ironheart

Executive Producer Ryan Coogler, offered the crowd an early look at the Disney+ series set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. After making her debut in said movie, Dominique Thorne will return as the titular character Riri Williams, to eventually don the armor and claim the title of Ironheart.

Feige brough Anthony Ramos to the stage to greet fans, and share some details on his character, Parker Robbins aka The Hood. The Disney+ series is slated for a release sometime in 2023.


Werewolf by Night

Next up, we received a very unique and exciting trailer for the upcoming Halloween special Werewolf by Night, directed by award-winning composer Michael Giacchino. Giacchino and the cast all joined Feige to talk about the project with Feige calling the special “fun-scary”. The spooky special is set to release on Disney+ October 7.


Secret Invasion

At long last, we received our first look and official trailer of the upcoming Disney+ series, Secret Wars. Don Cheadle surprised fans to talk about the show which boasts a phenomenal cast, made up of Samuel L Jackson, Don Cheadle, Colbie Smulders, Ben Mendelsohn, Olivia Coleman, Emilia Clarke, and Kingsley Ben-Adir.


Armor Wars

Cheadle quickly segued into another upcoming Disney+ series where Cheadle return as Rhodey, the main character of the show. Fans of Rhodey can expect to see the character in a whole new light, as well as a host of awesome new armor sets, given the name of the series.


Loki: Season 2

Season 2 of the hit Disney+ series was announced the day, the final episode of season 1 aired. Now the series is already deep in production. So much so that the audience got to little glimpse of the upcoming series.

Surprisingly, the cast showed up to D23 directly from set, with Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino and Ke Huy Quan. Not much else was revealed about the series and all we know is that Loki Season 2 is still set to be released sometime in 2023.


Echo

Next up the cast of Echo stepped onto the stage, with Alaqua Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Devery Jacobs, Cody Lightning and Chaske Spencer all excited to talk about the upcoming series There wasn’t much to take away from this part of the showcase as we don’t even have a release date. Here’s hoping it drops on Disney+ soon.


Daredevil: Born Again

D’Onofrio was eager to talk about the 18 episode series, Daredevil: Born Again, which hasn’t even started production yet. The crowd then went wild when Daredevil himself, Charlie Cox appeared on the stage to talk about the series. Production may not have started yet but fans were still treated to a sneak peak of an upcoming episode of She-Hulk, featuring Daredevil.


Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The MCU’s upcoming Black Panther sequel got some time to the shine at the showcase, with director Ryan Coogler taking to the stage to show some exclusive footage from the much anticipated MCU movie. The majority of the films cast appeared on stage to the crowd’s surprise to talk about the movie, from Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Tenoch Huerta and Angela Bassett. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to release in theatres November 11. For those who haven’t already, check out the awesome first trailer.


Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

Those in the audience were reportedly treated to a spectacular sneak peak of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, as Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Jonathan Majors took to the stage. The cast briefly talked about the film but we didn’t receive any new info other than what we already know. Hopefully we will see a trailer soon, as the film is still set to release in theaters February 17.


Fantastic Four

The first update for the highly anticipated Fantastic Four movie was revealed. Feige confirmed that Matt Shakman, the director of all the Wandavision, is set to direct the MCU’s Fantastic Four movie.


Captain America: New World Order

Next up we received some new casting news for this upcoming Captain America sequel. Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez and Carl Lumbly joined Feige on the stage to announce that Tim Blake Nelson will finally return to the MCU as “The Leader” after 16 years since The Incredible Hulk. Captain America: New World Order, is set to for release in theaters May 3 2024, so we do still have a long while to wait.


Thunderbolts

Quite possibly the most exciting news from the showcase was the whole cast reveal of the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. With Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Hannah John-Kamen, Olga Kurylenko and David Harbour all returning roles. We can witness this epic MCU movie in theaters July 26 2024.


The Marvels

Last but certainly not least was a sneak preview of The Marvels with Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Teyonah Paris and director Nia DaCosta joining Feige on stage. The film opens in theaters July 28 2023.


Conclusion

How does Feige do it every year? Yet again Marvel Studios have blown D23 out of the water. Not only with Rogers the Musical brilliantly kicking off the show, but with the spectacular cast reveal of the Thunderbolts movies this D23 showcase was more than a success. Well done Marvel Studios, well done.
