Rating Summary
Something from Tiffany’s is a predictable Christmas romcom whose big heart and undeniable sweetness will win over viewers.

Something from Tiffany’s follows Rachel (Deutch), a woman who is in a mostly one-sided relationship with her tattoo artist boyfriend Gary (Nicholson) and Ethan (Sampson) who’s planning to propose to his girlfriend Vanessa (Mitchell). After a minor accident occurs outside of a Tiffany’s where Gary is hit by a car, Gary and Ethan’s bags are accidentally swapped and Rachel receives the engagement ring intended for Vanessa while Vanessa is gifted the earrings meant for Rachel. Rachel and Ethan meet soon after at the hospital in which Gary is being held and sparks begin to fly almost instantly. After spending more time together, they soon start to realize they might not be with the person there meant to be with.

There’s very little that separates Something from Tiffany’s from anything one would see on the Hallmark channel around this time of year or any of the countless Netflix Christmas romcoms that seem to release weekly around Christmas time. It follows the exact same formula as most of those films and has a premise that would fit quite snuggly within that subgenre. But if there’s one person who can elevate any film and make it significantly better just by being in it, it’s Deutch who carries this with ease like the absolute star she is. Deutch gets to turn up the charm big time in this one and showcases how charismatic of a star she is by nailing both the comedic and dramatic moments this role requires of her. It’s nice to see her take on a role as light as this and get to have fun again in a nice little romcom like this.

Sampson might not have the same charisma or screen presence as Deutch but he more than makes for a capable lead alongside her and has a bright future ahead. Deutch and Sampson share great chemistry with each other and because of that, the central romance really works and like all good romcoms, viewers are left rooting for them to get together by the end. The scenes they share are far and away the best of the film as they make it easy to buy into their relationship because of how well they sell it. Meanwhile, the film has a really fun supporting cast who all fit their roles perfectly, especially Jojo T. Gibbs who hopefully starts popping up in a lot more stuff after appearing in both this and this year’s Fresh.

As enjoyable as Something from Tiffany’s is, it’s still a very formulaic romcom with not much that makes it stand out and as a whole. There isn’t a single surprise to be found in it and it’s entirely derivative of many other (and better) romcoms, some even from earlier this year. It shares quite a few similarities to other recently released Christmas comedies that become noticeable for anyone who has seen them recently. Though partially a comedy, there isn’t a whole ton of laughs either and a lot of the more comedic moments fall a bit flat. Nicholson does fine in the role of Gary but the character as a whole isn’t the most well-written and will likely get on audiences’ nerves despite that being the point.

This isn’t a new Christmas classic by any means or something that viewers are likely to remember long after the credits roll but if they find themselves looking for a cute, feel-good Christmas romcom, then this will more than satisfy the average moviegoer. There’s a certain sweetness about it and a great big heart at its core that will likely win most audience members over in spite of its issues. If nothing else the film will have many wondering why Zoey Deutch isn’t one of the biggest stars in the entire world at this point. She can do anything and is one of the most exciting actresses working today.
