In celebration of Pride Month, MUBI will bring a fresh batch of new exclusives to Pride Unprejudiced, the platform’s ongoing film collection dedicated to LGBTQ+ Cinema. New films added to this collection include the powerfully-defiant drag queen documentary Playback, and a silly (but cute) lesbian rom-com Girlfriends and Girlfriends.

Other notable highlights arriving to the platform in June include Crimes of the Future (1970) by David Cronenberg, the historical AIDS crisis docudrama, Beats Per Minute by Robin Campillo and Pacifiction which premiered at Cannes and TIFF last year.

With a commitment to inclusivity, MUBI invites audiences to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ narratives. Playback | dir. Agustina Comedi, 2019
Using opulent VHS archive footage and reenacted scenes, this hybrid documentary explores the experience of a group of drag queens amid Argentina’s military dictatorship and the AIDS epidemic. Playback premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival and won the Teddy Award for Best Short at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2020. (Trailer)

This visually enticing and symbolic, documentary short follows a group of Colombian indigenous transwomen from the Emberá tribes. Ariabda is a visually enticing and symbolic short, with a patchwork approach that blends the magical, the spiritual and the local rituals of the Emberá. (Trailer)

Girlfriends and Girlfriends | dir. Zaida Carmona, 2022
Winner of the 2023 Bright Future award at International Film Festival Rotterdam, Girlfriends and Girlfriends is a sexy lo-fi rom-com following lesbians in their thirties living as they were in their twenties. They are in love with love but, in their search, they destroy each other, wandering from ex-girlfriend to ex-girlfriend in the bathrooms, beds and streets of Barcelona. (Trailer)

BPM (Beats Per Minute) | dir. Robin Campillo, 2017
This multi award-winning, festival darling takes place during the early 1990s when AIDS claimed countless lives. BPM is a moving docudrama follows Act Up-Paris activists fighting general indifference and Nathan, a newcomer to the group, who has his world shaken up by Sean, a radical militant. (Trailer)

HAND-PICKED BY HARI NEF
MUBI’s first guest curator in North America is actor, model, and writer Hari Nef—who is starring in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Sam Levinson’s upcoming series The Idol. For this occasion, Hari picked a selection of her ten favourite films that are currently available on MUBI, which highlights her distinctive perspective on cinema.

SHIN’YA TSUKAMOTO
Next month, MUBI will kick off a retrospective of acclaimed cult director Shin’ya Tsukamoto, whose work defies categorization as he boldly explores the limits and potential of the human body. Featured in this collection are his gonzo cyberpunk masterpiece, Tetsuo, the Iron Man, alongside his nightmarish noir, Bullet Ballet, the psychological freak out, Kotoko, and his most recent work, the samurai epic, Killing.

SOLVING PUZZLES: THE CINEMA OF HONG SANG-SOO
Hong Sang-soo’s films rely invariably on dialogue and conversation (frequently between characters under the effects of too much soju!) to expose the intricacies of human miscommunication. Standing as playfully complex variations on the same theme––romantic entanglements between men and women––these movies ultimately provide a unique, understated, wryly humorous take on the eternal battle of the sexes.

New York, 1980: Three complete strangers—Bobby Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman—make the astounding discovery that they are identical triplets. Crimes of the Future | dir. David Cronenberg, 1970
The predecessor to David’s most recent feature of the same name – In the future, millions of women have died from Rouge’s Malady: a disease caused by cosmetics discovered by mad dermatologist Antoine Rouge, who has disappeared. As Adrian Tripod searches for his missing mentor, he meets an old colleague whose body produces strange, functionless new organs. (Trailer)

Danny Collins | dir. Dan Fogelman, 2015
Inspired by a true story, Al Pacino stars as aging 1970s rocker Danny Collins, who can’t give up his hard-living ways. But when his manager uncovers a 40 year-old undelivered letter written to him by John Lennon, he decides to change course and embarks on a journey to rediscover his family.
