A common phenomenon in television series has been the filler episode. Offering exposition and filling gaps in the story up to that point, it is often a bridge between what has happened so far and what is to come. Delivering some reveals, the main purpose of the episode was to address the issue viewers had with last week’s episode which was the apparent time jump following the group fight against Sam at Dr. Cardona’s house. Doing so awkwardly, investigating the jump uncovered some more not so surprising truths when it came to the connection between Goldokin, Shetty, and The Woods, but it probably shouldn’t have been a whole episode (though it is the shortest of the season so far). While there’s not really much else to say about it, once again, the chemistry of the cast carries an episode that saw Marie, Andre, Emma, Cate, and Jordan try to figure out what happened and how they ended up where they did. Providing some twists and turns, the outcome arguably wasn’t that much of a surprise. That being said, these developments didn’t land in the moment.
Our five characters all woke up after a party they didn’t know they attended on top of losing their memories of the last few days. Meanwhile, Marie and Jordan were dealing with complicated feelings of their own for one another. The main issue was trying to piece together what really happened and that proved to be an adventure in and of itself. Inevitably connected to the larger conspiracy at play, the closer they seem to get, the further away they end up. The extent of the conspiracy and those involved also further unraveled as a betrayal paved the way for the reveal of what The Woods was really designed for, using Cardosa to devise a way to control supes presumably for Vought, under the supervision of Shetty. Sam was their prime test subject but that may no longer be the case. Though based on the series so far, there is still plenty of work left to do in that regard. While not a supe herself, Shetty has consistently shown that she is a powerful character in her own right.
The end of that adventure saw Marie, Andre, Cate, and Jordan at a crossroads where they were faced with the truth about one of their own. A big twist, it was not executed particularly well but in the grand scheme, perhaps more time and character development will rectify this, however, the characters and story will ultimately goal remains to be seen. Though the story appears to be starting to come together, whether or not it all works together remains to be seen as the characters and the conspiracy angle still feel a little too disconnected at this point with only 3 episodes left this season. Maybe this episode is that bridge to bring them together. Either way, the performances continue to do most of the heavy-lifting.
In the end, Welcome To The Monster Club is a decent filler episode that does its job even though it probably shouldn’t have been a whole episode.
