QUEER

1950. William Lee, an American expat in Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton, an expat former soldier, shows him that it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection. Queer premiered in competition at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The film stars Daniel Craig, who has earned Golden Globe and Screen Actor’s Guild nominations for his performance, and Drew Starkey (Outer Banks, Love, Simon). The film was adapted from the William S. Burroughs novel of the same name by Justin Kuritzkes, who also wrote Luca Guadanigno’s other 2024 film, Challengers.

England, 1865. Katherine is stifled by her loveless marriage to a man twice her age, and his unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband’s estate, a force is unleashed inside her so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Lady Macbeth had its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival, and stars Academy-Award nominee Florence Pugh in her second feature film role.

Star, a suicidal teen now too old for foster care, develops a candid rapport with An, a student from Shanghai assigned to watch over her in the hospital. A nightly exchange of secrets, text messages and possessions quickly expands the boundaries of their relationship, altering their inner chemistry. Queens of the Qing Dynasty had its North American premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and was nominated for Best Costume Design at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards. The film was shot on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia where the film’s writer and director Ashley McKenzie was born.

The Childhood of a Leader (Drama, Mystery) – Streaming on February 15

In the aftermath of World War I, 7-year-old Prescott moves to a château in France with his German mother and his American diplomat father. As he witnesses his father’s part in the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, the boy learns to manipulate the adults around him, developing a terrifying ego. The Childhood of a Leader is Brady Corbet’s feature film directorial debut, and also features The Brutalist star Stacy Martin. The film premiered at 2015 Venice International Film Festival, where it won Best Debut Film and Best Director. The film stars Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse, The Batman) and Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Hunger).

When dancer Elena meets sign language interpreter Dovydas their instant connection bodes well for a romantic relationship. But when Doyvdas reveals he’s asexual, their dynamic changes as both try to find a way to be together while fulfilling their respective needs. Slow had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where director Marija Kavtaradzė won the World Cinema Dramatic: Directing Award. Streaming on MUBI in time for Valentine’s Day.

In Miami’s Little Haiti, Xavier makes a living as a demolition worker while his wife Esperance holds down two jobs to sustain their cozy household. But when he is tasked with dismantling his rapidly gentrifying neighborhood, Xavier is faced with the realities of redevelopment. Mountains is Monica Sorelle’s directorial debut, which won her the Someone To Watch award at the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards. The film will stream as a part of the CUT TO BLACK: CELEBRATING BLACK CINEMA collection alongside Dahomey, Omen, Mami Wata and more.
EUREKA
Eureka (Drama, Western) – Streaming exclusively on MUBI February 21

A cowboy arrives in a village in search of his daughter, a native policewoman arrests various offenders in a snowy landscape, while her niece, a basketball coach, reunites with her grandfather for a decisive journey that will shape her future. Eureka premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and stars Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises, The Lord of The Rings trilogy) and Chiara Mastroianni (Persepolis, Beloved).
UNREST
Unrest (Drama) – Streaming exclusively on MUBI February 1

New technologies are transforming a 19th-century watchmaking town in Switzerland. Josephine, a young factory worker, produces the unrest wheel, swinging in the heart of the mechanical watch. Exposed to new ways of organizing money, time and labor, she gets involved with the local anarchist movement. Unrest won Best Director at Berlin International Film Festival in 2022, and was an Official Selection at Toronto International Film Festival in that same year.
