THIS IS NOT A COMING OUT STORY

The beautiful rainbow of queer experience defiantly resists facile attempts at categorization, and so does queer cinema. With filmmakers breaking free from the celluloid closet, coming-out stories have become undoubtedly vital narratives of film history, yet mainstream cliches surrounding trauma and acceptance have also left audiences hungry for more. In place of all-too-familiar tropes, the bold and audacious films in the THIS IS NOT A COMING OUT STORY collection depict queer lives through a prismatic lens. Turning toward communities and subcultures that exist outside of heteronormative ideals, these complex character portraits do not make queerness their sole focus, but approach it as a facet of vaster emotional terrains and sociopolitical frameworks.
