Just because the shift was coming to an end, that doesn’t mean that the season can’t drop one more bomb for Robby. A case of unfinished, or unaddressed, business, the closer his day was coming to an end, the more he has unravelled under the weight of his concern and worry. Not recognizing the person he was anymore, Robby needs a chance of scenery, but however he goes about it is still a question. Another highlight in the reel of Noah Wyle, this episode is yet another feather in his cap. With the help of Duke, we get ever so closer to the truth.
As the day shift were moving on and the night shift was taking the reigns of the emergency room, scanning in all the paperwork was the only task that remained between the staff and their freedom. Meanwhile, the transferring of patients was on, as Robby’s hovering became more intense and Abbot couldn’t help but pick up on the tension. Dana was worried about the path Robby may be taking, thinking that she was never going to see him again. Perhaps fate played a role in him maybe second guessing that decision by throwing Robby a little speedbump. Ultimately, the fate of Duke continued to weigh on him and with his health taking a turn for the worse, this made things worse for Robby. Hanging around out of concern for he, and the other people cared about, he kept finding excuses to justify his concerns for the emergency room upon his sabbatical exit. In the meantime, the holiday continued to bring in patients with patriotic injuries to the emergency room, among the usual fare.
Amongst the general hustle and bustle, scanning sessions involving the day shift doctors made for some compelling television. Largely removed from the pressures of patients and patient care, Santos, Whitaker, Mel, and McKay just conversing and growing closer to one another as characters was a joy to watch. Another step in Mel learning to loosen up, Taylor Dearden jumps out once again. A showcase of their chemistry, a budding relationship between Mel and Santos is a promising sign for the future. Speaking of Whitaker, essentially becoming the new Langdon in his absence, he now found himself under Robby’s wing, a dynamic that has played out well over the course of the season and has shown how much he has grown as a character. But, never having the chance to share a scene yet this season, he wasn’t going to let Langdon define him in what was either an end-of-the-day fueled lash out, or some other frustration (maybe for having lost his ID badge again). However, since his return, Langdon has proved that he has more in his bag of tricks. He just hasn’t had the chance to show more of them yet.
Worried so much about Duke, who knew he would become the voice of reason, as another character concerned about Robby and his wellbeing. Either way, he was fortunate for still having Duke around as Robby’s parked motorcycle would have an unfortunate run-in with an ambulance. Fixing Robby’s bike, he also tried to help to fix Robby himself, offering emotional support in another showstopping scene between Noah Wyle (who also wrote the episode) and Jeff Kober (who deserves an Emmy nomination for his work here and for the season as a whole). The ‘Pitt,’ the place that has defined Robby for so long has become, in his mind, somewhere that he did not want to be anymore. However, it was the only place he could be, the one where he had purpose. That push and pull of that inner conflict is reflected all over Robby’s face, and will probably lead to some viewers feeling emotional watching him.
Dropping one more bomb, Al-Hashimi a doctor who is clearly going through things herself, earning the attention of Robby, has seen a few hiccups over the course of the shift. The final scene confirms that her issues were caused by an illness she believed she had hidden, but the truth was going to come out so Al-Hashimi decided to get in front of it by sharing her file with Robby. Though withholding these little seizures obviously made hr a liability, what comes from it remains to be seen.
