STREAMING FROM SEPTEMBER 3, 2026
MUBI, the global film distributor, streaming service and production company, announces the multi-award-winning, La Mesías– a Movistar Plus Original series in collaboration with Suma Content- from Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, the Cannes Best Director-winning duo behind La Bola Negra – will stream exclusively on MUBI (excluding Italy, Spain, LATAM & North America), from September 3, 2026. The deal was closed with Movistar Plus International.
Launching with a 2 episode premiere, the seven-part Spanish series was selected for Sundance and San Sebastián film festivals, stars Lola Dueñas (Almodóvar’s Volver, Cannes Best Actress) alongside Macarena García, Carmen Machi, and Cecilia Roth (Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory).
Enric’s childhood was shaped by religious fanaticism and a mother with messianic delusions. After witnessing the viral fame of Stella Maris, a mysterious Catholic pop group of young sisters, his memories come flooding back, along with secrets he and his sister Irene have spent years trying to bury.
When Enric reappears out of nowhere, he turns her world upside down. Their mother, Montserrat, built a family sect around them with a God-given mission — to save humanity through music. Now the girls are in danger, and it is time to face what they both ran from.
Spanning three decades, La Mesías strips away the conventions of family drama and horror alike. Told with thriller tension and touches of magical realism, it is a story about what gets passed down through a family, and what it takes to finally put it down.
LA MESÍAS WILL STREAM EXCLUSIVELY ON MUBI SEPTEMBER 3, 2026 in CANADA, UK, TURKEY, THE NETHERLANDS, GERMANY & AUSTRALIA, AND WILL ALSO BE STREAMING ON MUBI IN FRANCE.
