Barrels are sexy.
The cold open has Jake, Rosa, and Holt perceiving things a lot faster (or was everyone else slower?) than everyone else thanks to Charles’ new coffee machine.
Holt’s trying to find his new assistant but he’s been particularly tough. Jake found Gina so he offered to help him find a new assistant. Jake’s first pick, a man named Gordon (Karan Soni), seemed perfect as he shared a similar personality to Holt but he would completely misread their interaction, thinking that Gordon was flirting with him so Holt took a pass. However, Jake was not willing to give up on Gordon. After looking into his suspicious past, he made the conclusion that Gordon must be a spy planted by the Commissioner Kelly to figure out which captains Holt was recruiting against him. Holt and Jake would devise a plan to get a hold of Gordon’s laptop to determine if he was a spy.
Holt continued to be uncomfortable while taking Gordon to a barrel museum where he would have to have his bag checked. Jake would have to listen to Holt talk about barrels for what would be several hours while he had Gordon’s hard drive cloned. Jake couldn’t find anything on Gordon’s laptop but it wouldn’t matter as he himself would admit to being a spy. He also said he wouldn’t help Commissioner Kelly because he had fallen in love with Holt during their trip to the barrel museum (Holt was right!). He also agreed to wear a wire with Commissioner Kelly where he would triple-cross them. Holt anticipated it and had a backup plan of his own, finding another way to capture Kelly.
Terry was concerned about reorganizing the precinct as it was a mess with the influx of people. Amy’s Marie Kondo method suggestion did not work, especially with Charles and his many personal items. Next, a harsher Scandinavian method would prove to be tougher but it also meant seeing Rosa shoot a flaming arrow at their discarded belongings. Ultimately, a personal story from Terry about his connection to a set of suspenders would change Amy’s mind and she would back off.
Thanks to their successful operation, Holt was able to get Kelly to lay off of the precinct and had him reopen the first floor, thus eliminating the influx of people. Holt wanted to take Jake out for dinner but he already had plans with Amy which were to take her to the barrel museum which would turn her on.
Overall, The Honeypot was another great episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and another showcase for Holt. Andree Braugher as Holt was excellent here, delivering a stellar deadpan performance. His not so subtle flirting with Karan Soni’s Gordon was hilarious as was the everything in the barrel museum. Holt’s buying in to Jake’s plan thanks to Thomas Cruise movies was the icing on top. The B-story of the episode was fun as well as it featured Rosa and a bow and a touching personal story from Terry. Kelly may be off their backs for now, however, he surely won’t be gone for long.
Score: 8.5/10
