Whenever seeing any film, it’s normal to compare it to similar films in order to know more about it. Greener Grass is a weird exception because it’s damn revolutionary and the first of its kind. It’s quite difficult to explain what the surreal experience watching this film is like. However, what can be said is this outrageous satire of the suburban world is one of the most engrossing and strangest, but at the same time, funniest movies in recent memory.
This film is indeed NOT normal in that no words can prepare you for what’s in store. It serves as a satire about soccer-mom culture and suburban life, but on crack. In this fictional town, every adult wears braces on their teeth that were funny enough, already perfectly straight. That was just one of the many weird quirks on display here. As hard as all this sheer ridiculousness may sound to get into, the script is so tightly written and the film has you laughing so hysterically that it simply all works.
Besides the actual content at stake here, it’s absolutely worth noting how talented the two ladies behind Greener Grass, Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe as Jill and Lisa respectively. These 2 close friends happen to have a background in improv and stand-up comedy, and they both tap into those skill sets as they come in handy when creating such a twisted and messed up story that still feels very accessible to the audience.
It’s quite difficult to justify how great and how hysterical Greener Grass is without essentially summarizing the film and every scene in full, but all you need to know here is that Greener Grass is a must-see and will end up going down as one of the most quoted and rewatched comedies of the 2010s.
If you are still in Austin for SXSW, Greener Grass has one more screening on Saturday, March 16th at the ZACH Theatre at 6pm.
