Batwoman (1×19) A Secret Kept From All the Rest Review

Synopsis: When members of Gotham’s intelligentsia begin disappearing, Cmdr. Kane, Sophie and the Crows go searching for the newest homicidal threat to the city; Kate starts questioning the loyalty of everyone around her just when she needs them most. (TVGuide)

Batwoman is headed in an interesting direction, and with the season’s penultimate episode just casually mentioning Kryptonite, I am at a loss of words as to where the season was initially going before production was halted.

Over the last couple of episodes, the sole focus has been on decoding Lucius Fox’s journal, which holds the secret on how to kill Batwoman. After making its way through all of Kate’s exes, Alice manages to get a hold of the book, but with no way to decrypt it. So what does she decide to do? Find a codebreaker, of course! This proves to be rather difficult as Lucius Fox was one heck of a genius who wouldn’t make it so easy to figure out his code. Alice sends Tommy Elliot, who is now going by Hush, to find someone to break the code, but the efforts consistently fail. Also, Hush? I’m not sure how I feel about this new villain situation.

Naturally, Luke is in his feelings over Kate losing the journal in the first place. It was a secret his father died protecting, and he is baffled that Kate lost it during a hook-up. Things get pretty awkward between the two when they fail to agree on the game plan to get the journal back, and for a brief moment, team Batwoman is down to two members. With no one else to turn to, Luke hopes Julia can be of some assistance in locating the journal. Conveniently enough, Julia is after the journal as well, for reasons unknown. Shady, much? Side note: the jury is still out on Julia Pennyworth.

After a cryptographer and NSA agent both prove to be useless in decoding the journal, Alice looks to Parker Torres, who you’ll remember as the teen genius hacker. But Batwoman is luckily on the case and saves Parker before she becomes another of Alice’s electrocuted victims. Unfortunately, this all leads to Luke and Julia getting abducted by Hush, because who better than to decode Lucius Fox’s journal than his son? Well, Luke isn’t too confident in himself at first, but realizes his dad used personal information to create the code. And once he decrypted it and learned that it contains the key to killing Batwoman, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps.

With Luke gone, Mary and Parker work together to help Batwoman track Luke and Julia down. Thanks to Mary snooping around the Batcave, she finds a pair of glasses that actually translate Lucius’ code. Of course it would be something like this! They’re eventually pointed in the direction of Arkham Asylum, which means Alice has something to do with this mess. The hope was to give Alice the glasses in exchange for Luke and Julia, and while that is what happens, I can’t help but wonder if she made a grave mistake.

Also, what does Kryptonite have to do with all of this?! Um, is it possible that the Batsuit can be destroyed with the very same thing that can kill Superman and Supergirl?!

This just got interesting.
