The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc with the world as a whole, prompting the cancellation of countless film festivals including this year’s Calgary Underground Film Festival. As a result, many festivals have turned to a digital model to continue to present their lineups. To keep up with our latest digital CUFF coverage, click here.
Crazy World is, like the title suggests, a crazy film. A film so bonkers that it’s hard to describe what happened during the majority of it. The film definitely features hilarious narration, out of focus and shaky action sequences, over the top performances, and a lot of screaming. It never lets up and just keeps going as the pace of the film is so fast that it is absolutely draining to watch. This may sound like a negative but the jury is still out on that one.
Crazy World is a film made by the same Ugandan film company responsible for Killing Captain Alex. Not having seen that film, it does have a cult following and a legion of fans that think its so bad its good. Those same fans tend to say the film transcends just being another “The Room” phenomenon. It reinvents itself and makes itself a new genre. After having watched the film, this mindset holds some truth.
Crazy World objectionably does everything one shouldn’t do when making a film. Yet, it almost kind of works because of it. It feels like it’s not even a film but rather a new artform. The film features a long introduction before it starts explaining how it just wants to entertain. There is something very noble about that. These filmmakers know they are insane and goofy and have no pretentious goals behind their work. It is clear to see the filmmakers behind this film have passion for what they are doing and know exactly the film they are making. So hats off to them. Did I understand anything that happened during this movie? Not really. Was I confused and baffled watching it? Yeah. Is it a good movie? Maybe?
The film premiered in the midnight madness program at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and this is honestly the best way to watch Crazy World. Watching it on a laptop, the film did get tedious. However, it is still a fun movie and worth watching for the madness alone.
