Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend. As theatres continue to reopen and prepare for an onslaught of new theatrical releases, we will be analyzing the state of the box office, as well as VOD and streaming.
With the Venice Film Festival coming to a close and TIFF taking place currently, the fall festival circuit has been the talking point of the movie industry this past weekend, while the Box Office has taken a backseat. However, there was one new theatrical release that is definitely worth discussing.
Sony Pictures’ latest romantic-comedy The Broken Hearts Gallery, received a wide release domestically and has landed a spot in the top 5, as it was one of four films to make over $1M this past weekend. While the film has a way to go before it reaches its $8M budget, it seems to be generating very strong word of mouth buzz. With Selena Gomez listed as a producer and promoting the film through her social media, The Broken Hearts Gallery may stick around for a while.
Aside from new releases, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has unsurprisingly secured the top spot for a second week in a row. However, it endured a steep 67% drop in profit domestically, which will have a significant impact on its chances of breaking even. It seems to have more success overseas, especially in China and the U.K. Unlike Tenet, The New Mutants and particularly Unhinged both have had very steady holds, with 31% and 16% drops respectively.

3) Unhinged (Week 5: $1.5M)
2) The New Mutants (Week 3: $2.1M)
1) Tenet (Week 2: $6.7M)
