Big Mouth season 4 is a perfect example of how a series can refind itself following a lacklustre season while providing hope for where it can go from here.

When Big Mouth first hit screens back in 2017, it was an instant success. A crude yet hilarious show that showcased the reality of pre-pubescent kids in the most outrageously accurate ways possible. Sadly as the seasons went on, the quality of the series began to deteriorate as there was only so much ground for the writers to explore given the series’ subject matter. Luckily as far as this latest season is concerned, the series has managed to pick itself back up off the ground, delivering what was arguably the funniest and smartest season yet.

Season 4 picked up right where the last season left off with Jessi moving to New York and Nick & Andrew experiencing a falling out, setting the tone for the season with one of the best premieres in recent memory. Instead of strictly relying on sexual humour and situations for comedic effect, this season chose a more South Park like approach with its humor, putting characters like Nick, Andrew and Jay into completely new situations that mostly strayed from the formulaic nature that made up most of the last two seasons. Meanwhile, this season got surprisingly serious at times, exploring such themes as racial identity through the character of Missy in a way that couldn’t be more relevant and topical to today’s day and age. Other poignant themes which this season touched included teenage depression, anxiety, among other themes. Despite those big themes, the season handled them in an impactful way while not sacrificing any of the comedy as a result.

At the end of the day, season 4 of Big Mouth shows that the series’ creative team have steered the series in the right direction by refinding some of its past glory and setting a promising path for where it can possibly go from here. With this latest season serving as almost a revival for a series that had been running stale after a lacklustre previous season, it is abundantly clear that things are looking up from here.
