Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend. As theatres continue to reopen and prepare for an onslaught of new theatrical releases, we will be analyzing the state of the box office, as well as VOD and streaming.
It was announced today that the province of Ontario will be on full lockdown with a curfew in place for at least the next 30 days, while many other parts of the country are following in suit to a degree. It is not looking good for the domestic Box Office and it is going to be quite some time before we start seeing respectable numbers. However, theatres are still open in certain areas and VOD/Streaming titles are dominating in the meantime, so we will continue producing this segment.
Similar to last week, there were no major theatrical releases this weekend, so the same films that have been occupying the top 10 as of recent are still remaining in the top spots. In fact the top 5 from last week is exactly the same as this weekend. Despite a decrease in profits, Wonder Woman 1984 is continuing to hold the top spot, while The Croods: A New Age, News of the World, and Monster Hunter are the only other films in the top 10 that have been able to maintain a profit over $1 Million.
Two relatively high profile films were released on streaming this past weekend. After playing at TIFF and a variety of other festivals, the Awards season contender Pieces of a Woman has finally been released on Netflix. The streaming juggernaut is heavily campaigning on the films behalf, and while it has not managed to crack the top 10 trending chart on Netflix, it has generated a fair amount of word of mouth buzz. Herself on the other hand, is an indie drama starring Clare Dunne that has received rave reviews from both critics and audiences and will likely do well with those seeking to watch independent films.
Here are the top 10 highest grossing films domestically from the past weekend:
10) Alien: 2020 Re-release (Week 2: $60K)
9) Come Play (Week 11: $95K)
8) The War With Grandpa (Week 14: $146K)
7) Pinocchio (Week 3: $221K)
6) Promising Young Woman (Week 3: $566K)
5) Fatal (Week 4: $657K)
4) Monster Hunter (Week 4: $1.1M)
3) News of the World (Week 3: $1.2M)
2) The Croods: A New Age (Week 7: $1.8M)
1) Wonder Woman 1984 (Week 3 :$3M)
In the coming weeks, we will continue to analyze the state of VOD releases and will provide updates regarding upcoming films.
