Batwoman (2×08) Survived Much Worse Review

Synopsis: Batwoman’s abilities are tested like never before, while Alice’s search for Kate continues; Sophie and Jacob set their sights on Coryana; Luke and Mary contend with an unexpected guest. (TVGuide)

All roads lead to Coryana where the mystery behind Kate’s disappearance continues to take over the series. Again, following this storyline has become so overdone and boring so hopefully this week’s episode is bringing all of that to a conclusion. In pursuit of getting Kate back, team Batwoman (well some of them) head to Coryana to confront Safiyah. And then, of course, Ryan is slowly but surely dying as a result of the kryptonite embedded in her body. Not sure how she is still hanging on there, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, Luke fesses up to working alongside Batwoman when he meets up with Sophie to give her the tracking information on Alice. There isn’t much time to dwell on all of that as Sophie is more concerned with learning that Batwoman is dying. The only place to help her is Coryana, where the Desert Rose is located, and Sophie will need Jacob’s help to get it. But before they can do much of anything, Sophie and Jacob are abducted by Safiyah’s men, and taken away to Coryana.

Despite Ryan’s deteriorating condition, it becomes obvious that they have to get to Coryana. Deciding to go is the easy part, but getting there is what the team has to figure out. And apparently, the only way to do that is to get Ryan on a cargo plane and then have her jump out of it. So with no shark repellent in tow, Ryan is off to Coryana. Just before she lands, she activates an EMP that helps Sophie and Jacob break free of their cuffs, just as Tatiana was revealing Safiyah’s plans for them. Apparently, Sophie was going to be forced to join Safiyah’s army, and Jacob was going to have to watch one daughter kill another daughter. Pretty morbid!

Meanwhile, Safiyah is messing with Alice’s head and trying to get to her over her relationship with Kate. She knows that it’s a complicated one, and knows that if there is any way to mess with Alice, it’s through Kate. In the midst of their conversation, Batwoman shows up and is immediately taken down by Coryana’s guards after the EMP knocks out her communication with Team Batwoman. Batwoman is quick to spoil Alice’s plan in front of Safiyah who believed she was brought the real Ocean’s body. As a form of punishment, Safiyah puts Alice and Batwoman in the same cell and the conversation that follows is one that we’ve been waiting for these two to have for a while.

Batwoman learns that Alice doesn’t want to find Kate to kill her, she actually just wants her sister back. I think we all saw that coming for quite a while, but they just needed to take a while to get there. In any case, Safiyah offers a proposition for Batwoman who helped reveal Alice’s plan–Batwoman can have one thing she wants. Her options are either to get the Desert Rose for herself to help cure herself or save Kate and surprisingly enough, she picks the Desert Rose. That left behind Kate for Alice–who has a smile on her face we can’t quite decipher.

Since we know Alice doesn’t want to kill Kate anymore, she decides to entertain Safiyah’s request to kill the real Ocean. And because Alice’s desire to get her sister back is so strong, she goes through with it only to learn that Safiyah never had Kate to begin with. It was all a ruse to keep Alice and Ocean apart, even if it meant Ocean had to die.

Back in Gotham, Mary (Nicole Kang) and Lucas are confronted by one of Safiyah’s men who try to kill them but ends up getting taken down by Julia Pennyworth (Christina Wolfe). Unfortunately, Julia’s presence comes with bad news–body parts were found from Kate’s plane crash and the DNA proves that it is indeed Kate who died. So, is this the end of it? Let’s hope so.

Back on Coryana, Safiyah surprises us when it’s revealed that Ocean didn’t actually die because the blade Alice had used was covered with Desert Rose. He’s immediately brought back when Safiyah pulls out the blade from within him, and just like that, she gets Ocean to turn against Alice. With all the rage of Safiyah’s betrayal, Alice gets her revenge by burning down Safiyah’s Desert Rose garden. The only problem with that is that Ryan needed some Desert Rose to stay alive, so from the looks of it, there may now be two dead Batwomen on our hands.

While the garden burns down, Sophie stays by Ryan’s side as she takes what we think might be her final breaths. Back in Gotham, Mary learns that the plant Angelique had given Ryan came into contact with the blood of the man that tried to attack them earlier. Since blood makes the Desert Rose grow, it’s exactly what they need to help save Ryan’s life. Luke quickly calls Sophie to inform her that Ryan needs to be brought back to Gotham STAT. At this point, it’s unclear if she is going to make it, but obviously, she will because the show can’t really go on without her.

It’s unclear if this Kate story is indeed over because as the episode was coming to a close we get a glimpse of a person wearing a mask and a necklace with a red stone–the same one Kate had! So, yes, not sure where we’re going with this, but I’m really hoping that we are moving from Kate. Please?
