Synopsis: Cisco and Chester travel back in time and get stuck in 1998, repeating the same day over and over again. The key to returning home is at Chester’s childhood home but he refuses to visit. (IMDb)

This week’s episode of The Flash gives us something to laugh and giggle about as it time travels back to the late 90s. It’s been a while since I’ve thoroughly enjoyed an episode of The Flash and it’s interesting that it’s the one that doesn’t have the main character featured in it. Instead, the two men of the hour, Cisco and Chester rule the episode and give us plenty of moments to talk about.

As of this week, we’ve officially met all of the different Forces (Sage, Still, and Strength) courtesy of the trip Chester and Cisco took. Reminiscent of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, the time-traveling trip shows Chester and Cisco figuring out how to snap out of the time hold they are in. But what stands out the most about this episode is getting to know more of Chester’s back story. He’s a new member of Team Flash and getting to know more about his past so quickly was an unexpected treat.

While stuck in the 90s, we learn more about Chester’s relationship with his father, Quincy (Milton Barnes) who wasn’t a constant presence in his life. He briefly mentions living with his grandmother growing up since his father was always gone and then eventually passed away in a car accident. It turns out Cisco and Chester were transported to December 4, 1998, a day before Chester’s father passes away in a car accident.

While trying to figure out how to fix the transponder that could get them back to their time, Chester and Cisco go looking for a particular part. Coincidentally, when they go to purchase the part they learn that the part has been purchased by someone already and that someone is Chester’s father.

It is this coincidence that brings Chester face-to-face with his father where he learns just how much his father loved him. Everything he ever did was for Chester, it’s just something he never knew growing up. It’s a beautiful way to bring us closer to Chester, and understand who he is at his very core.

With Quincy’s help, Chester and Cisco face off with Deon (Christian Magby) who is serving as the Still Force’s conduit. With the power that gives him, Deon makes the time loop Cisco and Chester are stuck in. The time loop was because Deon was tired of living his future (er present?) and just wanted to relish in the best day of his life in the past. Thanks to Chester’s pep talk, Deon does the right now and sets all back to its proper time and place. However, he does vanish just as he reveals that it means he has the power to change the future. Not sure that’s what Chester meant, so we’ll have to see what consequences come from this. But hey, at least this whole experience motivates Chester to complete one of his father’s projects!

With all the Forces now out and about, Team Flash and the Speed Force have a lot to worry about. But something tells me, we can’t trust that darn Speed Force either.
