Offering a different horror experience, The Last Matinee may be a little cheesy but has charm and screams where it counts.

This will be one of many reviews during this year’s Calgary Underground Film Festival, to keep up with our latest coverage, click here.

The Last Matinee is a film aimed at the most seasoned horror fans therefore the squeamish better beware. Taking place for the most part in a movie theatre, it is already a great backdrop for a film. While not everyone is afraid of dark and empty spaces, there’s certainly something eerie about a nearly empty, run-down theater. Whatever it is, the film does a great job at utilizing this space as a key element in its storytelling.

One of the more entertaining aspects of The Last Matinee is how the events of the film playing in the theater mirrored those occurring within the theatre itself. Watching each unfold to each set of characters gets a little eerie as it elevates the film into something that could have easily been another paint-by-numbers horror flick. Though the film may be cheesy, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it is certainly not boring to watch. While the film won’t be winning any major awards any time soon, it has a certain type of charm that is sure to leave the majority of viewers satisfied.

At the end of the day, don’t say we didn’t warn you because if The Last Matinee taught us anything after watching, it is to make sure and check whoever is sitting behind us the next time we happen to be in a movie theater because we never know who might be watching.
