Mysteries and Martys shows viewers a lot more about Brother Dawn and his struggles with the fact that he knows he has flaws he can’t erase. This part of his story is enlightening and a little melancholy also. While Brother Day seems calculating, harsh and unforgiving, Brother Dawn is a young man falling in love for the first time. They are worlds apart in every way, including their imperfections. Even though they are clones, they are not perfect copies of the original Emperor Cleon. While this might sound like a small issue to deal with, for Brother Dawn it could easily lead to his destruction should any of the other Brothers discover his secret.
On Maiden, Brother Day is also responding to challenges in his leadership from Halima (T’Nia Miller), a woman that isn’t afraid to take risks for her people. She is defiant in a way Brother Day hasn’t encountered before. In response to this, he announces that he will undertake the most difficult of pilgrimages to win over Halima’s followers. This is an exciting part of Brother Day’s story because it shows us just how strong in mind, body and spirit Brother Day has become. He is only strengthened even further by this act which has interesting consequences for Halima.
The episode also looks into Hardin and her partner’s struggle with the anger and disgust of the Anacreon leader Phara. While this part of the story is crucial to the telling of Salvor’s journey, it’s the least exciting part of Foundation because it doesn’t really make much sense until the very end where it joins and catches up with Seldon’s story. And finally there was Dornick’s ongoing struggle with discovering her location, she eventually brings Hari “back from the dead” to try and discover exactly what happened between Hari and Raych (Alfred Enoch).
What exactly is her role is in all of these strange occurrences? Why did Raych kill Seldon? The answers are there but Dornick still feels like she’s struggling to understand Hari’s vision for Foundation and beyond.
