The second half of Graber’s message to Voit takes center stage in this latest episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution as all the devils are now here and so is their purpose. As the last episode ended on a cliffhanger with the BAU being put on a lockdown as a result of them being sent another mask, whoever is in charge of the new serial killer network let their presence known, but who is in charge? While that answer remains to be seen, the key to that mystery was perhaps within Voit’s past, one that remained still locked away somewhere in his brain. Using another unsub this week, they were merely a means to push the BAU towards the realization that they were contending with something else altogether. Not to take away from the episode, and some more great acting from Zach Gilford’s Elias Voit, we are only beginning to understand the extent of the power and resources connected to this new network as another cliffhanger shows how far they could go to get what they wanted.

Starting things off, an unsub with an affinity for spiders, ‘sicarius spiders,’ was a bit on the nose in terms of messaging. Having their victims ingest latex balloons full of spiders who will kill them from the inside as they tried to escape, this created quite the sight. What seemed to be a touchy subject for Voit, he decided to draw the line there. Regardless of where he stood, it was clear that the mask and this new case were connected. However, Rebecca being taken off the Sicarius case in favor of Delray and Voit’s new lawyer looked to make things more complicated. Cooperating with the BAU, Voit’s lawyer had other ideas. That being said, his lawyer did not stand a chance. That aforementioned connection was Voit’s uncle Cyrus, whose DNA was found on the mask and who introduced him to the spiders. Forced to relive that trauma, it marked a stark contrast from who he was then and who he is now.

Finding the location of the unsub and their hideout rather easily, the whole display was meant to deliver yet another message to Sicarius. Agreeing to get back to the field and doing the right thing, he tagged along as the BAU and SWAT found another man named Tate Matthews (Mustafa Speaks) tied to a chair and full of more spider balloons alongside what appeared to be explosives under the guise of Voit being the only one who can save him. The message for Sicarius, a tablet featuring a feed from a deepfake Cyrus had Voit chatting with someone on the other end, presumably the leader of the new serial killer network. Unlike Voit’s network, a disciple of Sicarius took it upon themselves to round up the killers he left behind and give them a sense of purpose. The reason for this new network was to help him fulfill Cyrus’ legacy, he needed to be saved. What became a conversation with the spirit of his uncle, Voit was faced with the one man he feared and he reverted back to his vulnerable self if only for a moment. As it was revealed that the explosives were fake, the real explosives were inside Matthews, in combination with the spiders, and they were inadvertently triggered by Garcia.

Moving forward by turning their focus on Sicarius’ disciple, their tech skills and their influence on the rest of the network could not be discounted as the network now operated as more of a gang and its killers as foot soldiers. Meanwhile, Matthews told Green and Alvez that he was being held captive with other male hostages. Finding the truck where the rest of the hostages were held did not prove to be a challenge either, but on that truck was the body of Voit’s old lawyer Vincent Orlov. Seemingly working with this mystery disciple to offer insight into Voit and the BAU, he appeared to no longer be needed.

Showing off the reach of this new gang, a cliffhanger saw Tara, Rebecca, and Delray led into a trap with the repercussions to be determined in the next episode. Now that a finish line is established, the journey over what is left of the season is sure to still have a few more tricks left up its sleeve with more facets still to be revealed. So close to the end, it would be wrong to believe that the endgame would be so simple. Despite the progress Voit has made towards good, he will remain the wildcard in the outcome of the season until proven otherwise. Three more episodes to go.
