This season of The Flash has been quite the disappointment and this week’s episode continues to that sentiment. While there are moments that stick out, like Iris’ return to writing, most of the story has just become boring and dull as the quest to take down Devoe continues.
The episode begins with Barry waking up to see that Iris is rummaging through all the files containing information about Devoe. She plans to write up an article warning Central City about him. However, Barry isn’t too keen on this idea and doesn’t think she should do it.
At STAR Labs, the team reflects on Devoe’s plan to rid everyone of their intelligence. Harry is extremely frustrated with his diminishing capacity to think and asks Cisco to help him out. Cisco decides to bring in the Council of Wells who aren’t very helpful and no longer want this version of Harry to be a part of their council. Instead, Cisco suggests that they create a new council with other versions of Wells.
Caitlin is still trying to bring out Killer Frost, despite the fact that she spent more time trying to get rid of her. Plot point? Yes, yes it is. Not to mention, this episode she is extremely selfish in her quest to bring Killer Frost back. She suggests bringing in Amunet to help them take down Devoe because she can resist his powers. Barry and Caitlin go to seek her out but find Norvok instead, who states he hasn’t seen her.
The team ends up locating her when they discover her real name. At this moment, Barry asks Iris to be careful about the article and insists that she proceed with caution, and even discuss it with the team. Instead of feeling defeated, she feels inspired to finish her article quicker so she can share it with the team.
Cisco introduces Harry to the new council who were all kicked out by the original council. They don’t seem all too promising but still possess more intelligence than Harry currently has.
Joe and Caitlin eventually find Amunet at a speakeasy and although she first tries to attack them, Barry runs in and tells her they need her help. But there is a slight problem, if she is to help them she needs more of the metal shards that she currently does not have. This is where we learn about Caitlin’s true motive about bringing Amunet in.
Once before, she was able to bring out Killer Frost thanks to Amunet and believes she is the key to making it happen again. However, Amunet reveals that she used a placebo and didn’t actually do anything to make Killer Frost come out but makes a deal to help Caitlin.
Later, Amunet learns that Norvok stole the shards they are looking for and confront him and his goonies. In the scuffle, Norvok manages to poison Barry who has to phase out of it to save his life. By the end of the struggle, Norvok is captured but Amunet decides she wants to betray and leave with all her metal shards.
And even though she doesn’t stick around to help them, she hands Caitlin a grenade that will help stop Devoe’s tech from working. Let’s hope this actually works!
Harry finally redeems himself by the end of the episode when he realizes that Devoe has not done anything recently because Marlize is no longer around. This could be used to their advantage to take him down. Barry tells Iris that he has decided to support her with her article and tells her she should publish it. And thanks to her article, all of Central City starts to chime in with Devoe’s whereabouts. Way to go, Iris!
If it wasn’t for Iris’s article, this episode would have been absolutely useless. Her storyline has been fun to follow and seeing her come into her own as a leader and now returning to her journalistic talents is an absolute treat. As for all the other storylines, I have genuinely lost interest and am not sure where the season finale will end. But here’s to hoping we get some sort of exciting ending!
Score: 6/10
