After three episodes of anticipation, Tyrone and Tandy finally have a moment where they speak to one another about the elephant in the room–their connected powers. It’s been a bit frustrating that it took four episodes for this conversation to happen, but thankfully it did.
Unfortunately for them, their conversation doesn’t exactly go in a pleasant direction when Tyrone attacks Tandy because of the privilege she flaunts using her powers. It’s definitely a necessary moment between the two because no one has point blank conveyed that to Tandy, and it was about time.
A very poignant moment in this episode came when Tyrone made some critical points to Tandy about the difference in their powers and how that trickles into society. He can’t use the powers he has without being targeted as a black man the same way she can get away with certain things because of her “white privilege”. Their connection may be strong through powers, but their worlds are miles apart.
After their conversation, Tandy nearly kills herself (strong conversation Tyrone, yikes) when she goes on a drug bender and nearly drowns. Thankfully she realizes she still has the desire to live and gets herself out of the situation.
This week is a frightening episode because it carries a lot of similarities to recent events and seeing Tandy pull herself out of her suicide attempt is a reminder that one can save themselves. But on the lighter side of this episode, Tyrone sort-of finds his superhero suit which is a cloak that his brother once used to wear.
There is a strong connection and story behind this cloak, not only with Tyrone’s brother but with their upbringing in New Orleans and the connection they have to this world. I think diving into his ancestors and bringing that aspect of Tyrone was commendable on the show’s part.
It will be interesting to see just how deeply rooted the series goes into Tyrone’s powers and how he, as a black man in America, will represent his background and bring it to life via his superhero abilities. It’s quite the interesting and exciting angle to take on a character, and it will be exciting to see the show finally picking up and giving more depth to the central characters.
While it has taken the show a little bit to get started, we are really starting to get to the root of the excitement and I’m getting antsy about what is yet to come. Hopefully we will get to see more action and more of both character’s background as they maneuver through their newfound powers and each other.
Score: 7/10
