This is a notable one but not for the reason you may think. Directed by Gus Van Sant and starring Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Watts, and Ken Watanabe, this movie was met with a chorus of boos when it was screened for press at the Cannes film festival last May. Of course a multitude of bad reviews soon followed and you can read some here. This was kind of surprising, to say the least, based on those involved here. The story here is about a suicidal American (McConaughey) befriends a Japanese man (Watanabe) lost in a forest near Mt. Fuji and the two search for a way out. The Forest touched on the Aokigahara forest earlier this year with mixed results so this one had the potential to be better but could still be. Whether this one will be remains to be seen. Watch at your own risk when The Sea of Trees releases August 26th, 2016.

I smell a Oscar bait movie…or at least potential to be one.

I don’t know if you’ve seen Genius but that was another one.

It was shallow and tried too hard.
