The BFG

If you would like to read my thoughts about the first trailer, click here. I’ve never been much of a book person which has been one of my biggest regrets so I’ve never heard of the book before seeing the first trailer. What sold me then was that it was a Disney movie directed by Steven Spielberg and featuring Mark Rylance as the lovable giant. While the first trailer simply foreshadowed the giant, we actually get to see him here and the inventive, whimsical world in which he lives. Based on what we’ve seen so far, it looks very promising and I’m excited. The BFG releases July 1st, 2016.

Swiss Army Man

On paper Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe both in a movie sounds great but I wouldn’t have imagined them in something like this. That’s not a knock against the movie as it looks great. I don’t think I would go a good job explaining it so I’ll just give you the synopsis which is “A hopeless man stranded in the wilderness befriends a dead body and together they go on a surreal journey to get home”. Dano is the stranded man and Radcliffe is the corpse that he befriends. I definitely admire Radcliffe’s dedication as it must have been hard to act like that for however long this movie is. I was also surprised by how funny this was. Swiss Army Man releases July 1st, 2016.

Blood Father (NSFW)

Now let’s explore both ends of the badass spectrum by starting with Mel Gibson who hasn’t really done much lately (we can probably figure out why) is back here along with his beard in a new movie called Blood Father. It’s funny how often these types of movies have to be about an older, protective father and his daughter who inevitably gets into trouble. Of course this is the case here as ex-con John Link’s (Gibson) reunites with his estranged wayward 16-year old daughter Lydia (Erin Moriarty) to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her (in other words, 16-year old girl stuff). Maybe it’s because I’ve only seen him in action movies but I found Gibson to be a real badass here and was fun to watch. The subject matter appears very dark where Gibson excels. Like him or not, I’m still excited to see whether or not he still has it. Blood Father releases August 25th, 2016.

I Am Wrath

Now let’s explore the other end of the spectrum with John Travolta in I Am Wrath. I don’t know why but I could never picture Travolta as badass action star. I guess I’m just used to seeing him in more dramatic roles. The story here wasn’t too overly original where Stanley Hill (Travolta) is out for revenge when a group of corrupt police officers are unable to catch his wife Vivian’s (Rebecca De Mornay) killer. So in the trailer, Travolta pretty much goes through the steps, investigating the seedy underworld of crime and corruption. Christopher Meloni also tags along. To be honest, I’m not really excited about this one. I Am Wrath releases May 13th, 2016.
