This month MUBI is proud to present a brand new, 4K restoration of The Idiots. Lars von Trier’s only feature made under the Dogme 95 “Vows of Chastity”.
Recognizing Canadian filmmaker, Nik Sheehan’s remarkable contributions to cinema, Symposium: Ladder of Love, The Drawing Master, and God’s Fool will be added to an exclusive film collection that celebrates his impactful works.
Other notable highlights arriving to the platform in July include First Reformed by Paul Schrader, Collective by Alexander Nanau, a riveting documentary that reveals the tenacious pursuit of truth, and the edgy, dark comedy Buffalo ’66 by Vincent Gallo.

No Sad Songs: Films by Nik Sheehan
At the height of the AIDS crisis, when HIV-positive people were being shunned by the government, the media and the general public, Canadian filmmaker Nik Sheehan shone a light on the plight and staggering resilience of the LGBTQ+ community with his directorial debut and one of the first documentaries about the epidemic, No Sad Songs (1985). Blending facts and figures with playful witticism, Sheehan’s distinctive approach to documentary is present in his other works (which arrive on MUBI in July), many of which also focusing on queer lives and queer voices.

Turn it Up: Music on Film
Encompassing both documentary and fiction, MUBI’s selection of music films celebrates the electric magnetism of performance, but also moves beyond the glitz and glamor of the stage to dive into the lives, trials, and tribunals of the artists themselves.

Shôhei Imamura: A Double Bill

Known for his exploration of complex human nature and societal issues, Imamura’s works often challenged conventional narratives and delved into the depths of human experience.

After being released from prison, Billy’s (Vincent Gallo) first port of call is to find a bathroom, but instead he finds dancer Layla (Christina Ricci).
