The best episodes of the series so far have been the ones that involve as many characters as possible within the case of the week as they showcase the great chemistry that they’ve built so far and this one continued along those lines.
Murtaugh and Riggs were investigating the attempted robbery of a car filled with cocaine from a police impound lot which led them to a suspect named Dino Brant (Chris Coy), who happened to be represented by Trish, who is a lawyer if anybody has forgotten. The two have had mostly separate work lives so far so it was nice to see them clash in this new way. Trish strongly believed in their innocence as she was personally invested in them, mentoring them from a young age and helping them stay out of trouble so it came as a shock to hear them implicated.
Not only did Murtaugh have to deal with Trish, he also had to deal with his bad heart which acted up here. In the middle of a car chase, Murtaugh’s pacemaker was acting up in the middle of a car chase, forcing Riggs to abandon the suspect and take Murtaugh to the hospital. This showed the progress in their relationship as he probably would have made that decision earlier on. Riggs continued to cover for Murtaugh as he did not want anyone else, not even Trish, to know what happened so they wouldn’t think he was damaged goods. This led to a different attitude from Riggs that made others suspicious that something else was going on.
This stemmed from another session with Cahill where she asked why Riggs still wore his wedding ring, implying that his connection to Miranda was still holding him back but he just wanted to keep her memory alive. To Cahill, it was still possible to keep someone’s memory alive while still moving on. She believed that he didn’t want to lose another partner. This kind of explained Riggs’ motivation in this episode. He cared more about Murtaugh than usual and tried to keep him away from as much excitement as possible to not trigger another attack and to keep Trish happy so he can go over for dinner.
Of course they couldn’t keep Murtaugh’s problem from everyone forever as Trish pressed Riggs in court, forcing him to reveal Murtaugh’s problem and she was obviously not happy about it. Murtaugh didn’t want her to worry. The weak evidence pointed to Dino but Trish fought hard and got the charges dropped. They later figured out that it was Dino’s brother Jerry (Luke O’Sullivan) who was responsible because he was caught up in Dino’s old gang.
Jerry was kidnapped by the gang leader, forcing Murtaugh and Riggs, with the help of Dino, to infiltrate the gang and to help get Jerry back while also arresting their leader in the process. Riggs, cuffed to a steering wheel pretending to be a crooked cop, was forced into the water but during the struggle, he lost his ring but instead of going after it, he let it go and swam to the surface. It looked like he may have turned a corner but the episode ended with Riggs buying another ring at a pawn shop.
Overall, this was another great episode with some exciting action and those Murtaugh and Riggs moments that make the show so fun. The case may not have been there but it was just a means to utilize the chemistry between the characters.
Score: 8.5/10
