With a movie like The Hurricane Heist, you would think that it should be fairly easy to nail down in terms of quality of the film, the story, the characters, etc. but the interesting thing about it was that while, yes, it was a very poor film, it also came along at just the right time for me.
Synopsis: A team of tech hackers embark on a $600 million robbery from a coastal U.S. mint facility at the same time a disastrous Category 5 hurricane is set to strike. The remaining people left in the deserted beach town are a meteorologist, a Treasury agent and the meteorologist’s ex-Marine brother. Together they not only must survive the hurricane, but also stop the mastermind thieves from accomplishing the heist of the century. (D Films)

The Hurricane Heist follows two brothers on very different paths in life that intersect during one of the largest hurricanes ever to reach the Gulf Coast. Will (Kebbell) is a successful meteorologist that has chosen to make it his profession to chase the very thing that scares him. His brother, Breeze (Kwanten), is a local repairman that has floated through life trying to avoid any attachments of any kind as a form of self-preservation. For the record, YES, his name is, in fact, BREEZE.
Breeze is tasked with fixing the busted generator at the Federal Reserve that has just gone out during the storm and as luck would have it also during a heist in order to steal massive amounts of old money before it is shredded. Will enters into the fray when a single security officer, Casey (Grace), manages to escape and enlist Will to help her break back into the Federal Reserve to stop the thieves and retrieve Will’s brother.
While that might sound okay on paper, in reality, what occurs is something far less exciting. The characters are poorly written, given paper-thin backstories and motivations within the film. However, both Will and Breeze have some truly awful Alabama accents that were oddly endearing. Kebbell is British and Kwanten is Australian so their portrayal of the American South and their way of speaking was absolutely hilarious. Most will find it abysmal which is understandable, but as the movie progressed, hearing how the brothers would try to make certain words sound Southern was hilarious.
If you go into The Hurricane Heist expecting an exhilarating cops and robbers movie, then you will be greatly disappointed and as a result, will miss out on an opportunity to just turn your mind off for a while and simply enjoy a simple story that is semi-entertaining and funny in all of the wrong ways. The Hurricane Heist is not good but is easily one of the most fun you’ll have in theaters so far in 2018. Expect nothing and at the very least you will receive very awfully crafted Southern accents.
Score: 4/10
Trying my best to get all thoughts about TV and Film out of my head and onto the interweb.
