It’s only fitting that the first episode of the final season of How to Get Away With Murder be bookended by two funerals. Suffice it to say that somebody new is going to die because that’s how the series works. Even near the end of the previous season, it was clear that everything may be more connected than it seemed and this premiere only continued that, setting up more of the inevitable big moments that the series is known for. In terms of this episode, entitled Say Goodbye, not much happened as it saw its characters preparing for the worst and saying goodbye whether or not certain people are actually gone.

As mentioned, the episode started with a funeral that was revealed to be Annalise’s. She was now in rehab (it was about time) and visualizing her funeral to stir up feelings of discomfort. Annalise did not exactly fit in to her new surroundings and seemed annoyed with it all (even using a fake name). Over the course of the episode, she would start to open up, having to learn to forgive herself in order to move on. Meanwhile, we also got glimpses of the events following the finale with a panicked Tegan calling Annalise about Carver (she took his place). This news started Annalise’s downward spiral that led her to rehab.

The others were still reeling from Annalise’s departure and Laurel and Christopher’s disappearance. The FBI were also still investigating them. Meanwhile, Nate was not willing to let things go. Tegan signed to have Carver’s body sent to London. He confronted her and she warned him but he didn’t care. Tegan took offense to the implication that she may have had something to do with it but he still kept digging for dirt. While Annalise was in rehab, she was still keeping up with the others (against the rehab’s rules of course).

Still looking for her birth parents, the others found that Michaela’s birth father, a pre-law student, knew Annalise after she defended them. She was also dealing with Gabriel who still wanted to be with her. She decided she could tell him the truth and he was okay with it. Meanwhile, Frank to Laurel and Christopher’s absence particularly hard, believing that there was something more going on. Connor was also scared but Oliver was tired of being scared and took charge.

It wasn’t until a heated exchange with her roommate that Annalise had a breakthrough. Perhaps it was a little too convenient but she finally began to confront what’s been holding her back (in a powerful scene). This was enough for her to come back to Philadelphia and call the others in for a meeting. Annalise wanted to help the others to move on and be free with the same exercise she did in rehab, taking out their frustrations on a pillow (Michaela was the most powerful). Meanwhile, It was also time to report Laurel and Christopher missing but while the police investigated, Frank found a key hidden inside a picture frame.

The news that Annalise knew Michaela’s birth father made her angry which led to Annalise’s real funeral (or so it seems).

It looks like Annalise is going to die but how it connects to everything else remains to be seen.
