Synopsis: Eli informs Jesse, Kelvin and Judy that they’ll each need to be front and center for Easter Sunday service, their biggest telecast of the year. Judy’s deference to Baby Billy threatens her relationship with BJ and with her family. (HBO)
” A foe can plan your destruction but only a loved one can break your heart.”
– Jesse Gemstone
And Yet One of You Is the Devil begins with a quick flashback to the night of the Atlanta Prayer Power Convention where Jesse and his gang embark down the path that ultimately gets them blackmailed. However, we see the night from Gideon’s perspective which shines a very different light on the events in question. Jesse clearly demonstrates his insecurity in being a father while in front of his boyz, leading Gideon to begin to plot his father’s demise.
In the present, Easter Sunday draws closer and things begin to heat up with Scotty and Gideon’s heist against the Gemstone family. Jesse comes face-to-face with his personal devil as Scotty infiltrates his household in an effort to blindside the family while stealing from them. This doesn’t go unnoticed by Jesse but he is quick to make the wrong judgment call about Scotty’s relationship with his son leading him to be caught off guard when Scotty is finally forced into acting.
Eli decides that he’s been incorrect in assuming that Judy is not ready for the spotlight and decides to offer her and Baby Billy a performance during the offering but Billy has other plans and spurns Eli’s charity favoring instead a performance at his church. Judy is forced to make a decision between her father and the recognition she’s always wanted and succumbs to temptation which leads to a hilarious breakup with her fianceé BJ (Tim Baltz). As Easter continues, Gideon gets cold feet with the heist and thwarts Scotty when trying to steal the money but out of mercy leaves him alive. This backfires as Scotty returns to the Gemstone compound to kidnap Gideon and Jesse in order to open the vault.
We as the audience knew that Gideon’s plan would eventually come to light with his family but Scotty was always the wild card that could never be accounted for. At the moment, his bold actions in taking the money and leaving Jesse and Gideon bound in the Gemstone vault remain unpunished and untraceable but the story is able to progress allowing for the final episodes to give a feeling of uncertainty and excitement for what is next.
This season has gradually became something truly wonderful and entertaining and seems poised for a finale that will leave us satisfied and still wanting more.
