The dragging narrative, lack of genuine horror moments and stagnant characters makes My Sweet Boy leave a bitter taste in the mouth.

Chester is working on the fields at the farm as eerie winds move around him. He speaks to Luz about every time he extends his stay by helping Abuela around the farm. However, Luz seems unhappy with his presence there and he decides that he will leave soon. That evening they talk about him sending letters to all the camps trying to find his brother. That vulnerability causes her to stay a little longer as they embrace. Here’s what went down in “My Sweet Boy.”

It’s January 1945 and the Nakayamas are getting out of the camp thanks to a sponsorship from Henry’s old boss. He has to be his gardener and they receive $25 each for reparations. Meanwhile, Amy is curious where Major Bowen disappeared to when he suddenly reappears and is excited to be eating the camp’s cuisine. The Japanese-American soldiers return to the camp including Walt Yoshida who has received letters from his concerned sister about what has been going on. He is quickly grabbed by Major Bowen for a celebratory talk and they walk off.

Walt starts getting volunteers to join the army including Toshiro Furuya (Alex Shimizu), but he urges him to not join. Toshiro will not have it and wants to release the anger within in. As Amy is walking around the camp, she is stopped by Major Bowen who requests her help to pick up party supplies from a broken down truck. She feels wary of the Major and believes he has bad intentions, but they arrive at the truck and the Major starts to help the men unload the truck.

During the party, Walt seems surprised that Amy changed her tune about the Major.  However, that night she is confronted by the Major as she passes out from the spiked punch. He found out that she sent that recording to HQ, but it was intercepted from a loyal friend of the Major. He sees this as an act of defiance and tortures her by discussing her dead loved ones and breaking her hand. She blames a spirit for what has happened at the camp, but he doesn’t believe her. Luckily, she manages to break free and smack him with the chair before choking him to death on the muddy ground.

Luz and Chester wake up together and she debates their secret relationship which has been going on for weeks. Chester has a better idea and they decide to wed at the farm, but we learn that one of the guests, Dona Maria (Gabriela Reynoso), has been possessed by Yuko. That night, the police arrive at the farm and Chester is forced to hide. However, they aren’t there for Chester, but for the disappearance of Luz’ father. Turns out Abuela is a curandera, a person who can see if people have passed on from this world.

Abuela and Luz state that this magic might cause the user to become lost in the spirit world, but Chester wants to use it to try to find his brother. They sit down and do the incantation where Chester is transported to the realm of death. He is greeted by a young Jirou who died of illness at as a kid. He decides to give Jirou some fun and play some baseball, but suddenly Chester starts to seize. They try to break the spell, but Chester becomes possessed by Yuko.

She takes his place in the realm of death so she can speak to Jirou. She slowly approaches him, grabs hold and makes them sink into the sandbox. When Chester awakes, he realizes who has followed them and notices that Jirou has disappeared from his photo. Chester opens up about Yuko and everything that has happened including how photos blur when she possesses them. They learn that Yuko has taken hold of Dona Maria and they decide to investigate.

Chester returns with the news of Dona Maria’s death and a baby onesie. While he believed that Yuko was there for him, Luz knows it is for her as she is pregnant again. Back in the family’s spirit world, Yuko greets Jirou just as her ancestor did with her. She calms him down saying that they will all be together once again as the camera pans down to show a baby cradle waiting their newest arrival.
