The Good Place (4×04) Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy Review

In Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy, we saw a simple yet effective episode that brought upon some mystery as the bad place continued to be a thorn in the side of our heroes, bringing forth a rescue mission that would leave the fate of the experiment in jeopardy. The chemistry between the cast has consistently been a highlight of the series and this episode would put it front and center, Jason especially.

The episode started with the gang playing magic pictionary (the drawings came to life) with Chidi and the new humans. Things did not end well when Chidi’s monstrous drawing (he doesn’t draw well under pressure) came to life. This would prompt an all-night brainstorming session that got interrupted by the new arrival from the end of the last episode, a demon from the bad place named Glen. He claimed that Michael was not really Michael but Vicky in a Michael suit (he made the suit). Michael was adamant that he was him while the others were rightfully skeptical of Glen. However, he lied about getting a call from Sean and not knowing about the Michael suit (Sean wanted to use it to torture them if the experiment failed). Michael also lied about the freak out that led to Eleanor taking charge. Meanwhile, Eleanor claimed that she was pretending not to trust Michael but it seemed like she wasn’t pretending anymore.

In retrospect, there were signs that something was going on. Glen claimed that when Linda was sent away, the bad place kidnapped the real Michael and replaced him with Vicky. An easy solution would be for Michael to take off his suit but he was too embarrassed, he was a fire squid and he was afraid that the others wouldn’t see him the same way again. To help, Janet tried to create a demon lie detector device but it just blew Glen up (he wasn’t dead but would eventually go through all the ridiculous stages before reforming into a demon).

A chat with Chidi and some nachos convinced Eleanor to give up and call the judge to have the experiment restarted. However, Michael was willing to sacrifice himself by blowing himself up in order to preserve the experiment. Ultimately, he would be saved by Jason who figured out that Janet was secretly a bad Janet in disguise (they kidnapped Janet using the earlier plan). Meanwhile, Michael’s attempted sacrifice was enough to convince everyone that he was himself.

Now, it’s up to Jason and Michael to save Janet from the bad place!
