We have now reached the end of this miniseries incarnation of The War of The Worlds. With this being the final episode of a three-episode series, it would have a lot of ground to cover which would put a lot on the shoulders of this episode. With that being said, this episode certainly delivered satisfying closure but don’t expect it wrapped up in a bow.

The episode started in the future where the remaining survivors turned to religion for a solution to their woes. Ogilvy and Amy discussed how they got to where they were (Ogilvy got burned when he jumped into the Thames to escape, only to have the aliens boil the water). Amy was playing coy with how she got there, claiming to not remember. Meanwhile back in the present, Amy, George, and the others were still trapped and things were not getting better any time soon. George and their elderly guest both drank tainted water and were sick. Since it was clear that there were no supplies there for them that they would have to leave but a few unexpected guests would make this difficult.

The aliens were finally out of their machines and a few made it inside of where they were being held up. They started to feed on them, starting with their elderly guest. When it came to what to do next, they were divided with George believing in a diplomatic approach while Frederick was more interested in fighting back. The latter approach failed miserably, leading to the aliens feeding on Frederick. Meanwhile in the future, while George Jr. (Woody Norman) wasn’t getting any better, Amy had a theory that the aliens were susceptible to the same diseases as humans as they were dying by eating the flesh of sick humans. They just needed sick people to experiment with. When none were offered, Amy offered Ogilvy George Jr..

Back in the present, George was becoming increasingly delirious and was adamant about reasoning with the alien outside. Amy was adamant that she and George should wait it out until the alien outside died. Eventually, it became clear that George had to sacrifice himself in order for Amy to survive and that’s what he did in an emotional sequence where Amy couldn’t bare to watch as she ran away and never looked back (she believed that there was a chance that George survived but it was highly unlikely). Meanwhile in the future, their experiment was successful as the typhoid blood killed whatever organism that was preventing seeds to grow. However, the area priest was against the idea that the answer did not come from God.

After Amy got away in the present, she went back to her home to find a note that George had left for her and she kept it ever since. Meanwhile, George Jr. was paying attention to everything that had been going on and was curious about how things were in the past so Amy explained it all to him, eventually bringing up her and how she packed her bags and went on an adventure to a magical land where she would eventually met George. Amy told George Jr. that she would also take him to that place.

Letting out all her emotion, Amy went outside and smashed a series of glass covers, revealing a growing plant and then looked up to see the skies clear and the sun perhaps poking out. Things may not be all doom and gloom after all as it looks like the human race (or at least the U.K.) may survive after all.

In the end, a future reunion between Amy and George would have been nice but the open-ended hopeful ending was probably the best we can hope for. After starting off slow, it’s safe to say that the series hit the landing. Eleanor Tomlinson was definitely the M.V.P..
