Batwoman (1×06) I’ll Be Judge, I’ll Be Jury Review

I’ll Be Judge, I’ll Be Jury kicks things off ridiculously as a man being chased by who we come to know as the Executioner is electrocuted because of his own stupidity. It turns out the man who dies is the ADA and he was just the start of the Executioner’s killing spree.

Luke and Kate figure out the Executioner’s identity, and it’s all rather dull and boring. Honestly, the best part of the episode is when they name-drop, which is something Batwoman has been doing all season. The Joker and Cobblepot were the latest DCU characters to be mentioned, and that’s about the coolest thing that happens.

Kate, the Crows. and the GCPD show up at the warehouse where the Executioner is holding hostages, and in the process, Sophie gets shot. Kate er Batwoman drops her off at Mary’s illegal medical clinic where she asks Mary to tend to Sophie’s wound and keep her there until further notice.

Kate soon figures out that the Executioner has a certain way of killing his victims–capital punishment. Naturally, it was easy to figure out what he would do next which results in Batwoman getting stuck in a room with her father which is in turn used as a gas chamber. This episode was a mess.

Then there’s plenty of annoying tangents that don’t make sense about the episode, like the whole Alice/Mouse ordeal. It’s not clear what the heck is going on there but it was tough to care.

There are some things to be commended in the episode which deal with the police force and how Gotham unfairly dishes out punishments. This a point we’ve always known about this city, but it’s nice to see it be acknowledged in this episode.

By the episode’s end, Kate’s father manages to kill the Executioner, and has somewhat of a positive interaction with Batwoman. But I’m pretty sure it’s not enough to save the episode or his perception of her.

It was nice to get to see some progress between Jacob and Kate in this week’s episode as father and daughter have been at odds since the series started. But given that Sophie confessed she knows Kate is Batwoman, things are about to change. Side note: I do not like Sophie at all and she’s extremely annoying. I’m so glad she turned around and walked away when she saw that Kate and Jacob were sharing a moment.

Let’s hope next week is better–or that things start looking up by the time we get to the crossover.
