Synopsis: Rebecca visits Randall in Philadelphia; Beth is troubled by a request from Deja; Kevin has doubts about himself. (IMDb)
Just like that, we’re one week away from the This Is Us midseason finale. How are we already here?! And given how past Thanksgiving episodes have been, I have a feeling this one will be an episode we won’t soon forget.
Sorry kicks off with a teenage Randall visiting Rebecca, which is always a beautiful interaction to encounter. But a gloomy cloud hangs over the family as Kate’s boyfriend Marc comes over to pick her up for the movies. He seems controlling, rude, and condescending, and I can only imagine what this will mean for Kate as time goes on. It’s going to be a bad time in her history and will make her story come together in a way we haven’t seen before.
While Randall is concerned about Marc, Rebecca is just happy that Kate is happy. However, she seems down herself which Randall picks up on and decides that she should try applying for jobs. It’ll bring in some money and give her something to do.
At her first interview, it seems to go well but Rebecca doesn’t know how to use the software. It’s the only thing that is keeping the manager from giving her the job so it’s a good thing Randall steps in to vouch for his amazing mother. It’s a wonderful moment to see how much Randall cares for Rebecca, and how far he is willing to go to make sure she’s happy. He offers to train Rebecca on how to use the software and assures the manager that she will be ready to go come Monday.
Randall’s magic pays off because Rebecca lands the job! She is overwhelmed by the fact that she’s doing an entry-level job at her age, but hey, everything will be okay, Rebecca!
On the Nicky, Cassidy, and Kevin front, things are turning out to be just fine. Cassidy has officially signed her divorce papers and Nicky is getting ready for his hearing. Unfortunately, Kevin is MIA and drowning in his sorrows at a bar, but don’t worry, he’s just drinking club soda! He is, however, instigating people to punch him and completely forgets he needs to be in tip-top shape for Nicky’s hearing.
Throughout the episode, Kevin keeps seeing glimpses of Jack in Nicky, and it’s a reminder that Jack didn’t get to see him turn into the man he is today, but a piece of him is always there through Nicky. It’s a tearful moment at Nicky’s hearing when he’s asked if he has remorse for what he did, to which he answers no. Because if he didn’t throw the chair through the window, he wouldn’t have faced the truth of his life and he wouldn’t have Kevin by his side. Tears were definitely flowing in this scene! But hey, at least Uncle Nicky is coming to the Pearson Thanksgiving!
Kate and Toby struggle with getting Jack to eat solid food, and when he finally does, Toby ends up missing it. Sadly, Kate doesn’t have the heart to tell him after he brings all sorts of food to try and get Jack to eat.
Deja and Malik have their first chaperoned date but it doesn’t go as great as they have may have wanted. After getting into a fight, Malik tells Beth that he was trying to convince Deja to talk to her and Randall about visiting her biological mom. With everything going on, they forgot to fulfill their promise to Deja, and she’s been too afraid to ask them. And when she finally does, Deja asks if her mom can join for Thanksgiving. This is going to be one hell of a family gathering, isn’t it?
Rebecca and Randall have a nice day out during her and Miguel’s visit but things take a turn when she starts freaking out about losing her phone. Randall notices subtle changes in Rebecca that are alarming to him. If you recall the flash-forward scene we saw of a very sick and old Rebecca, then this early decline in her health should worry you too. It looks to be the start of it and it is heartbreaking knowing where it will take us.
Next week is the fall finale, and it’s the big Thanksgiving episode. And if past fall finales are any indication, we best brace ourselves for whatever is coming!
